External drive question: USB or Firewire?

I've always used Firewire external hard drives in the past for storing videos I download from pay sites I've joined.

I'm finding that USB 2.0 ext. drives are cheaper and was just wondering if anyone here can confirm that they playback video files as fast as Firewire drives.

Well, I don't know the technical aspects of if it is faster or not, but I can tell you I have some USB 2.0 drives and I do not have any problem using them to playback/edit etc. with my Mac. Good luck.

we only use firewire 400 or 800. USB is just too slow for editing for us.

Actually that is true. I should have mentioned that I keep about 200GB on my computers hard drive, and when I edit stuff, I just move it over onto the hard drive from the USB external...then I edit, then I move back.

I dont even have luck editing via firewire, which is why I do it that way.

I do editing also and would only use Firewire for that.

But for just watching WMV or Quicktime video files I was wondering if USB 2.0 would work.
