    DVD isnt dead yet....

ok.. so I know a lot of you have been saying DVDs are dying, which in our business model I would have to disagree with you guys (and I and just saying you guys as a generalization, because I know there some of you that are making money from DVD sales). Anyways, I found this article which I thought would be an interesting post. Yes, I know this for the main stream DVD market, but we have noticed our sales trends closely follow the main stream market.

p.s. there have been a few other articles recently talking about how DVDs sales have been up, I can not seem to locate them, but if I do I will also post them.

I personally can't wait for someone to start offering a gay porn DVD to disc service (where you can download a movie and burn it to your own DVD disc to keep and play on a DVD player). I heard Vivid is doing this for straight porn.

As long as its not an outrageous price, I'd much rather get my gay DVD porn this way instead of visiting my local porn shop.

But then again, the streaming video quality on many major sites like Sean Cody, Chaos Men, etc. is getting much closer to DVD. I watch both DVDs and Internet porn on my HDTV and its getting harder to tell the difference.

USA Household DVD player ownership is over 90%, DVD's are not going anyway anytime soon. DVD prices will drop dramatically over the next several years, as online digital competition takes some of its market share. The high end of the market will be filled by Blu-ray DVD as the new "hard product" of choice.

There will be some form of hard product disk type format being sold for at least the next 7-10 years. Its market share will drop as IPTV and direct to consumers home digital platform improves.

We are already seeing the USA cable providers opening up and starting to test gay adult content. Within 3-5 years you'll see full gay hardcore content on PPV/VOD from your cable provider. Within 3-5 years you'll see the ability to download and stream direct to your home HDTV via a web based connection.

Lots of changes and new opportunities coming down the road. The smart producers are the ones that will figure out how to keep a foot in each format and how to make money form them all.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! <G>

Badpuppy has had the technology for download-to-burn for at least 4 years. I'm not sure if they are actively offering/promoting it but it's definitely there.

I agree with Titan and Pornteam; our sales continue to grow, our distributor says they sold more units in 2007 than in 2006, and more in 2006 than 2005. It will eventually go away, but people still want physical product in their hands, at least for the moment.

AEBN has burn to disc as well.

Porn does follow mainstream in many ways. Locations for both are on the decline. Movie Gallery is in bankruptcy and closing locations and brick and mortar porn stores are on the decline as well.

There will be a shift to VOD and PPV for sure. I am sure some studios are selling more product now. It's called growth. But a company can only grow so far in a declining market.

One thing is certain - The price that a consumer pays for a physical product will decline drastically over the next two years. So, maybe a producer will move more product, but it will be at a much lower cost.

This is the thing... it's NOT a declining market. If it were declining, the total sales that distributors are reporting would be going down, and they are going up, dramatically. At the same time, I do believe that retail prices have and will continue to drop. This is the main reason why bricks-and-mortar stores are doing so poorly; they are used to obscene markups (a DVD they buy for $30 going for $85) and they are getting killed by the online retailers who are more reasonable (the same $30 DVD goes for $45-55)

The major thing that's happening as far as units sold is there's a ton of crappy product on the market, so instead of 50 studios selling 3,000 to 25,000 units of a title, there are 1000 studios selling an average of 400 units per title. The biggest players are still selling in the thousands or tens of thousands of units, but their numbers have declined because of all of the little studios selling a couple hundred units. But overall, the total number of units sold is increasing.

I thought AEBN was already offering this service? could be wrong.

they are - read my post and lloyd's.

btw, chip - a lot of DVD producers have been telling me their sales are declining. i've long been of the impression that the problem there is more with either their marketing or their distributors.

Don't forget ISP's are going to start charge more for download bandwidth. Verizon is starting already I believe.

Please don't tell our midwest customers that they're supposted to but only DVD, they are still buying VHS in record numbers.

Sorry was going to reply to everyone but they beat me to it about AEBN.

I would have to agree with you that part of the problem is marketing their product. The other part and Chip touched base on it, is that there is just a ton more content/DVDs out there now for the consumer to choose from.

Thanks for the AEBN tip but so far the big gay studios like Titan, Colt, BelAmi, etc. are not offering DVD downloads on AEBN or elsewhere.

I guess my original point was that when all studios big and small jump on the direct to DVD download bandwagon I think you'll see a lot of retail porn stores go out of business and overall DVD sales drop dramatically.

I also think this could be a good thing for studios because all profits will go right to them and they won't have to factor in packaging costs. Hopefully we'll get to the day where a studio will sell a hard copy DVD for $49.95 and an internet download DVD for $29.95 or something like that.

According to AVN it is a declining market based on gross revenue and percentage of total porn sales. Last year they reported the biggest decline in gross revenue. Not sure where they get their figures, but even if they are not accurate, then it's still a comparison to the same non accuarte figures for the past 10 years.
