Members Area Jump Pages - What Do You Think Of Them?

by jump pages i mean, once a surfer joins a paysite and hits the 'members' access button, instead of being taken directly to the 'content' inside the members area, they hit another page first which is basically just a big collection of upsells for the paysite owner, then from that page, they have a link going to the actual content/members area.

Do you think these types of pages are a good or bad thing inside a paysite?

I can see them having a value to the program owner, especially if they are offering PPS but at the same time, i can also see how there is a potential for these jump pages to annoy the member.

What are your thoughts on these types of upsell pages, are you even concerned with them if you have done your job and sold a membership anyway?

    Regards,

    Lee

If I were a member of a site and had paid a regular membership fee (not a $1 trial) I'd be pretty annoyed if I had to wade through a page of crap to get to the site I paid for

    Agreed.

I believe they would have a drastic affect on retention. But, then I guess it all depends on what kind of content is in the site to begin with.

Show them only to nonrecurring members or recurring members that have cancelled.

I have to respectfully disagree on that one. These have become over time some of our most loyal customers.

Right. But you don't know that beforehand. You can run around in circles with that if you really want to. I know that they cancelled, so they currently have no interest in our site. That doesn't mean they won't come back later, and showing them some ads when they weren't about our site, isn't going to affect them later. Most nonrecurring members also do not come back the day after their membership ended.

You have a point. I just look at our stats and know that a very high % do come back. Of the ten support issues I dealt with in the last 4 hours, 8 have been a member more than once. One had been a member at least 10 times. It's hard for me to treat them anything like a full recurring member.

Why does that member choose nonrecurring so many times? He sounds like an anomaly to me.

When I cancel a membership somewhere, I don't consider myself a full member any longer.

It happens! I just dealt with a member with login problems. And looking through his purchase history, I saw that he had paid for 7 non-recurring memberships during the past 8 months. Some of them actually overlapped each other!

We have many people that choose non-recurring options and come back over and over. Many of them simply don't want any recurring charges. I think it's partially a "control" issue. They'll control when and for how long their membership is.

Back on topic, if I signed up for a membership site and paid a "normal" or "full" price I'd be quite annoyed by an immediate upsell. To be honest even if it was a pop under.

Different reasons I guess. We have a lot of UK traffic and many of those choose that, even at a higher rate. Also, all our Maestro customers can only chose that as Maestro doesn't allow rebills. That alone is several hundred members.

I think MANY choose it due to the agressive X-selling on PPS. Control. And when I did support and asked one member (after seeing he was a member for like 14 month in a row on the non recur) he said, "if i choose recurring then you store my credit card, I don't want that." Go figure.

I would say in any given month we flip 1,000's of non recurring members with 1,000's more non recurring members. Way over 1/2 of the new non recurring members have been non recurring members in the past 2-3 months.

I would actually say that a pretty good % of our non recurring members are as loyal as our recurring members. Except that they choose to pay an extra $7 a month and it's hard to justify throwing a page of ads at them. On the other hand those that join and cancel many times flip flop between us and one other site that is our competitor, so even they are pretty loyal as well. One month at BM, cancel and join EL, back at BM one moth later.

I can say that when I am In surfer mode and I join a site this kind of puts me off. On the other hand, I've only seen this kind of stuff at some of the sponsors that treat the surfer badly anyway and the quality of their stuff is crap, so seeing a page like this on a site like that just serves to rienforce that distastful image. ( nobody's sites on GWW ) You know the large surfer mills I'm talking about. They just run them in, feed them crap, take large amounts of money and then run them out. Kind of giving the surfer a bad impression of the online industry.

I do not know how I would react to them on a quality site. I usually don't like to be sold after I have paid my membership. I don't know how that kind of stuff should be handled. I mean, you are offering quality porn that the surfer enjoys and you realize that there are some other sites that they would probably like to see.

How do you let them know about the other content without making them feel that you are simply trying to get them to pay another membership.

If you have quality material and a satisfied surfer, this might be possible if presented in the right manner.
