I Wonder? How Long Do You Register Domain Names For?

I was just curious to see how long you folks register domain names for when you initially purchase them?

At the moment we'll typically register them for 12 months unless the domain has huge potential then we'll register them for 5 years at a time however, this month we're actually about to go through our entire domain name inventory and any that make consistent sales or have developed sites on them, we're going to register them for a further 10 years.

Im just wondering if you folks do anything similar once you have a domain that provides results in terms of actual sales to them, with or without significant amounts of 'work' on your part to develop them?

Do you think registering a domain name for 10 years is overkill or would you say it was a good idea if its performing?

    Regards,

    Lee

Particularly that the greedy people at Verisign are raising the rates for .com and .nets every year by the maximum permitted in their contract with ICANN, it's probably a great investment to renew for a long period. I doubt we will see interest rates on savings accounts approaching anything near 8% in the next few years, so saving where you can (on domain registrations) seems like a good investment.

I also do the 1 year then if it's doing well I'll go for 5yrs. The rest I'll do the yearly renewal till I'm seeing enough money to pay for 5 years.

I register for a year and basically do what DirtyNick does. I was such a fool, though, years ago. I would register a domain (I had some really good one) and if I didn't make any money I would cancel my registration. I was such a newb!

Financially I'm not able to do 5-10 year renewals, even on domains that I know are performing and holding #1 spots in G**gle for their search terms. And I guess I'm not holding that many domains with "only" 112 or so! LOL

Generally speaking, I register a domain for only one year. Had a webmaster tell me that If I registered it for longer, it would get better rankings....personally, I think that is a crock. The only time I will register longer is when I create a domain name for a movie and we build the site just for that movie and it feeds to our main site. Since I know that domain will stay active for a long time I will register it for at least 2 or 3 years just so I don't have to putz around with it.
