I prefer linux with a cPanel. It's been easier for me to use and seems to be more stable with more addons and options.

We have both. Our site and chat is hosted on Linux servers and our streaming media is hosted on Winders server. :juggle:
    Thanks,

unless you specifically require windows hosting for something like wmv streaming or running specific software, then go with linux.

Generally speaking, linux is more secure, uses less server resources (leaving more for your websites/traffic), is more scalable, is more available and is less expensive to run (due to both the windows licensing fee plus windows applications being way more expensive and less available than linux ones)

free bsd or linux. windows is horrible for hosting. you can't use .htaccess with it or any normal stuff like that and normal programs won't work with it. i was on a windows box once - man, was i happy to get off of it! only use windows if you need it for a live show or something like that, and i'd keep everything else but what you need it for on a separate server.

Linux with SSH - despite limited capabilities, makes a lot of things a breeze. I don't know if there is any equivalent command level access on Windows

Linux or FreeBSD for servers, absolutely.
Windows has it's place on the desktop, but it's absolutely
a desktop system, NOT a network server system. You have
to fake a lot of things to make it appear that a Windows is
working as a server - fake things that Linux and FreeBSD,
which are designed as network server systems, do for real.

On the hand other, Linux and FreeBSD were designed from
the ground up as network systems, so they lagged behind a
little bit on desktop / local disk stuff, lacking especially the
polished look and eye candy of Windows. That's why it's now
that the desktop is largely just a doorway to the (inter)network
that you see Linux really competing on the desktop too.

as a person who uses windows to host his sites i would say linux unless you really know windows and just dont want to learn another OS system.

I chose windows because i write a lot of custom scripts and programs that run on the box for the site but external to asp and php on the system.
