You do realize by 'gay' I mean a man who has sex with other men?

What Type Of Hosting Do You Currently Use?

I was wondering what type of hosting plan you folks were currently using for your primary business server?

We're on 2 dedicated boxes over at NatNet and also have a 3rd backup hosting plan for some of our mainstream stuff over at GoDaddy.

So what type of hosting do you folks currently use?

    Regards,

    Lee

A dedicated for domains that I post more heavily on, and a virtual for domains with less traffic.

Used to have 7 servers - I stopped seeing such a big se benefit from that, and decided to save money and cut back.

we have several dedicated servers at NatNet, plus a couple others at other data centers spread out. So far all in the US, though we'll probably add one in Europe sometime in the next year.

I use colo... My mainstream business requires it, so as those servers age I use them for porn...

    servers

For the most part 95% of our servers (for clients) are linix (or centOS) based. For many reasons.. including the amount of traffic they can handle, stability, and security. 4% are windows ONLY for windows streaming and 1% is Mac (apple) based for quicktime streaming.

We colocate at ContentColo.com , put in our own servers, only way to fly. Initially, we had a virtual host setup at rackspace, before we had a lot of content, but kept running into the problem of other vhosts killing the server with bad scripts.

I guess that virtualization stuff would work for limiting that now, but having our own servers really helps us maintain the quality of our streaming content feeds.

    Bandwidth charges

What hosting provider is best for videos where members can download and I won’t be hit with over the top Bandwidth overages fees?

I use a dedicated server at Host Head for my pay site and have my blogs and free sites on a virtual server at Naked Hosting.

Both providers have been very helpful and easy to work with.

    bandwidth

Repeat after me.. there is no such thing as "unlimited" bandwidth. As the old joke goes... A fat man goes to an all you can eat buffet and in a few hours he is asked to leave because he is eating to much. The fat man points out the sign said.. "all you can eat".. the owner quickly says.. yes... that is all YOU can eat... and kicks him out.

You can google yourself to see how some hosting companies market this. Also look at http://www.findmyhosting.com/truthunlimited.htm.

    Back to your question.

If you are going through a lot of downloads or streaming you might want to talk to a hosting company that will bill you on what is call "95th %" instead of data transfer. 95th % is how most datacenters and hosting companies are billed.

Or... if you are looking for just cheap download bandwidth look at Amazon's data storage option.

There are always pros and cons to "cheap" bandwidth. Amazon offers limited support and even their download can be slow at times. The more you jump into discounted bandwidth options the more issues you might run into.

Instead of $x / mbps for a top level bandwidth provider like... ATT, Level(3), Sprint.. you may get bandwidth for 50% off that.. but it is on cogent or some other 3rd teir provider. No add in the price and value.

If you get 50% of bandwidth and go with cogent..
And your membership drops 10% because of issues.
Is the cost savings for bandwidth enough to cover the lost sales? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Not all bandwidth providers offer the same peering. Not all hosting companies or data centers offer the same bandwidth (or peering).

We operate off of two data centers.
They are within five miles of each other. They are 100% different.
Different speeds, different connections, different providers...

    Summary.
Take your time and research what hosting companies offer.
If you find a company that will over your unlimited bandwidth for $1 a year dig deeper. Use tools call "looking glass" to test their network from different locations around the world. If you use the unlimited bandwidth providers start test what max speed you can really get to your system. See how they handle load and what paths your customers have to take to get to your servers.

Sorry for the l only reply.
For short.. if you are looking for a hosting company that does not charge you triple the rate for double the traffic.. ask about billing on 95th % instead .. or start to shop around with the information I mentioned.

I dont mind admitting to be new to gay porn websites. Currently im using moonfruits sitemaker but I'm concerned about the lack of html and the potential to be removed as im happy to list 'niche' (legal) sites.

However after spending so much time building my sites i dont want to start from scratch if I move them to a new host. Any suggestions would be welcome.
