(Berlin) A study by one of Germanys leading scientific institutes indicates the presence of N-Nitrosamine a known carcinogen in most commonly used brands of condoms.

The research, by the renowned Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Institute in Stuttgart, found N-Nitrosamine present in 29 of 32 types of condoms it tested in simulated conditions.

The researchers said they believe N-Nitrosamine is present in a substance used to improve condom elasticity. When the material comes in contact with bodily fluids, it can release trace amounts of the carcinogen.

"N-Nitrosamine is one of the most carcinogenic substances," the scientists said in their report. "There is a pressing need for manufacturers to tackle this problem."

The report calls for stricter government controls on the manufacture of condoms.

Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment said that daily condom use exposed users to N-Nitrosamine levels up to three times higher than levels naturally present in food, but that doe snot necessarily pose a risk.

AIDS workers said that there is no positive proof that N-Nitrosamine poses any immediate health danger and advise people to continue using condoms.

I think we might be seeing a lot more about this in the adult community over the next few months especially given the recent hiv outbreaks
