I have bought .info before. These usually are for smaller things, and I rely on .com for seo and bigger sites.

I agree with what has been posted so far, TLDs other than .com really shouldnt be utilized for major sites or hubs, in the past i have purchased .info domains but only used them as 'test' sites because you simply cant be $0.99 for a domain name that for all intents and purposes is disposable.

anything more than .com would be a small fortune in "renewals/privacy" with the amount of sites I have. ( interpreted: it's too many when you forget you own a site and register to buy it when it's renewal comes time , that damn "privacy" is going to bite me in the a** one of these days! :joker: )

generally always dot com although I have done well with a few dot nets
When considering starting a site on a .net address once a friend advised me to avoid .net because it's "the Brooklyn of the Internet".

of course it matters!!!
I like to take time out and watch my less computer-savvy friends use the internet, and I am always amazed at how so many of them simply type in a domain name like gaywidewebmasters without the .com extension into their browser, and browsers handle this by first bringing up the .com site by default.
domains matter for some kinds of sites - paysites and blogs come to mind - but not much for galleries or freesites.
