Amidst rumors of Twitter being acquired by Google, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone on Friday suggested that the micro-blogging site was in talks with the search engine, but stressed that Twitter wants to remain an independent company.

"It should come as no surprise that Twitter engages in discussions with other companies regularly and on a variety of subjects," Stone wrote in a blog post titled "Sometimes We Talk."

Stone did not elaborate on specific companies or topics discussed, but noted that the goal of Twitter "is to build a profitable, independent company."

He addressed the rumors after waking up to an inbox that was "flooded" with inquiries about a possible Google-Twitter matchup.

"We're just getting started," Stone said. "We've got just over 30 employees now, and we're working out of a loft in San Francisco's SoMA neighborhood."

Stone concluded his post by pointing to several open positions within the company – one of which is a director of strategic partnerships.

"This is the first business development role in our mostly product- and engineering-oriented company," the ad reads. "Your goal will be to figure out which relationships with other firms are the most important and beneficial to Twitter's strategic objectives and to nurture those relationships into mutually productive arrangements as efficiently as possible."

Whether Google becomes one of those strategic partnerships remains to be seen.

I could see this being a huge deal for both companies, looks like this all started with a rumor that Google was going to be purchasing Twitter.
