and the they are upholding the passage of prop 8 as well
so much for "all men are created equal"
what a bunch of bullshit
This decision makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever.
Couples who married before prop 8 passed are still legally married but, no new gay couples can marry LOL
Only in Amerika.
Regards,
Lee
the fact that California's schools are a mess, the state government is floundering, income is down, property value is zip, and the right still manages to get people to not only put that prop on a ballot and get enough people to vote for it simply staggers me.
Their world is falling down around their ears but "we gotta stop them gays from marryin'!" Their kids are getting a fourth rate education and they get IOUs from the state for their tax returns, but they still expend energy and millions of dollars on fighting gay marriage
It's shocking to me that, in this day and age, the majority of Americans support discrimination. What's more disturbing is that we have a minority president that doesn't support equal rights! WTF
The supreme court nominee is getting more coverage then Gay marriage.
I'm tired of voting Democrat only to be shown the back of the bus administration after administration. Every administration finds excuse after excuse to prioritize other matters over Gay equal rights. For a country with equal rights written into the constitution this is maddening.
Totally my sentiments almost word for word. Just ask people who asked me what I thought of this all before the election! Yeah, I voted for Obama, but I agree with Bruce Villanche (spelling, sorry)...have to wait and see if anything is different, heard that story before. It's good this topic is here and we are discussing it, but personally I have to get off this topic because it makes me very, very angry.
I didn't get to put my full edit up, went past my 5 minutes....this is what I meant to write:
Totally my sentiments almost word for word. Just ask people who asked me what I thought of this all before the election! Yeah, I voted for Obama, the stupid hypocrite who started his inaugural with a prayer from one of California's leading ant-gay clergy bigots. No, Obama is no friend of mine...I knew that when on the pre-election debate that was exclusively on gay issues, that he and Hilary (and all of the candidates except one, I think), spoke clearly that they were against gay marriage. I agree with Bruce Villanche (spelling, sorry)...have to wait and see if anything is different, heard that story before. It's good this topic is here and we are discussing it, but personally I have to get off this topic because it makes me very, very angry. So much more to say...basic human rights are not hard to understand!!!!!!
The shocker to me is that Iowa is more progressive now then California, which is fine, just takes some getting used to.
I'm also frustrated that organizations outside California used their money and power to influence the Prop 8 outcome.
The good news is that times are changing and that we lost by a very slim margin. We eventually will have victory :bananacock:
That I am sure of. Once people get a taste of freedom, there is no turning back. And if they haven't yet, after a while, even if that's a long time, the oppressed ultimately overthrow the oppressors. At least that's what history tends to show.
Maybe this is Pollyannaish, and definitely a generalization. I think bad things are basically stupid and destined to eventually self-destruct anyway. Sort of like the survival of the fittest. Only what's healthy and smart survives.
The Roman Empire was pretty twisted, and its last incarnation (the Byzantine Empire, or Eastern Roman Empire), didn't finally fall until the 15th century when the Ottoman Turks sacked Constantinople...just saying, corruption can last for a long time.
You should read up on Larry Niven's ideas about "water empires" that he explores in his fiction
That's the horror, Jacob, that destruction lasts a long time. I recognized this when I wrote that "even if that's a long time." My comment before this one was more of a hope than anything. I don't even know if it's true. It's just what I believe.
I know some things, but really my historical knowledge is less than a speck compared to yours, and I'd never be able to catch up. I enjoy reading your the interesting facts you present, for that reason, and it's good to know.
