Content Vs. Traffic - Which Is More Important Today?

It used to be said that traffic was the most important commodity to adult webmasters (with some debate from content providers) however, these days im actually wondering if the reverse isnt true, that content has actually become the most important commodity to an adult webmaster.

As more and more blogs, tube sites, etc keep sprouting up, it seems that the owners of these sites are starting to provide more and more free content to the surfer in order to build their traffic levels, in doing so, using longer and longer movies and more and more pics to keep the surfers coming back to their sites.

Do you think that in the industry today, content has actually become the more important commodity over traffic as more and more webmasters are giving surfers more and more content to build their traffic levels?

It seems its starting to get harder to drive traffic to a site unless you dont have an excess of content to offer and im wondering just how long it will be before we start seeing your basic free site or tgp gallery blown in to oblivion as affiliates are constantly offered longer clips, full scenes and more images to use on their predominantly user driven sites.

Your thoughts, do you think that content has become more important than traffic once was?

    Regards,

    Lee

From a sponsor's point of view, traffic and content need to be equally balanced. We have some sites that have excellent conversion and retention ratios, and whose content sells like hotcakes when put to DVD, but we have a hell of a time getting the traffic to exploit it.

Also, if you get a lot of good traffic sources, but the site has poo for content, you get conversion ratios that look like 1:3000 and zero retention.

It really needs to come together.

Also, with webmasters and content, it becomes a question of "giving away the store". If a webmaster has so much great content up that the surfer can "get the job done" then they don't even make it to the signup page. They'll get tons of repeat drive-by fappers and they traffic will do them no good if they have too much content.

I'm going to play the Taoist card...All things must be in balance and harmony...

I think to some extent there is a symbiotic relationship between both content and traffic and, traffic and content, however, as of right now in the industry i beleive that there has been a shift in the paradigm that once was it takes traffic to sell content, nowadays it takes content to get traffic, especially as more and more end-user orientated sites are gaining in popularity with surfers.

You can take traffic and throw it at a blank page with a join link on it and, eventually someone will generate a sale.

However, you take traffic and throw it at a page with movie clips on it and a sale will be made eventually but, that traffic will also stick around waiting for 'more' movies to appear.

You can't have one without the other. The right kind of traffic will buy the right kind of content, all things being equal

As sponsors and affiliates we are always trying to balance the traffic with what there is to offer, to maximize sales. Nowadays people are doing more window shopping before buying, it's just the circumstance we are in right now.

Obviously, you need both, but the trend I am seeing is that surfers now know how to find the sites with the best content and go directly to it. They don't have to "stumble upon" a tgp, a blog, or a link list to find what they are looking for. The middle man is being cut out.

    I disagree.

These days you can get thousands of hits having no content whatsoever on a site, i actually know someone a few years ago who purchased a heap of traffic and had absolutely nowhere to send it except to a sponsors tour.

Likewise there are some sites with great content out there that have absolutely no traffic.

A sponsors tour has content and by definition the sites you mention with great content and "absolutely no traffic" by definition had to have traffic for you to see them :cheekymonkey: BAH HA HA HA HA

All net traffic has a destination. I'm feeling oddly philosophical today
