Lee, I just bought a 1TB Western Digital Ext USB drive from Best Buy for $119.99. WD seems to get better consumer ratings than any other brand.

Check out frys.com. They usually have really good deals and good service.

I just paid $99 for a 1.5tb Seagate about 3 weeks ago (sales are constantly going on and off.)

btw, I recommend going with Seagate drives. Warranty is 5 years, and I've had far fewer failures of Seagate drives than any other brand.

If you are going to buy from Best Buy WD is the way to go. We only buy G Drives from http://www.g-technology.com - I buy them from Amazon. After having many drive crash, this is the way to go.

I think everyone has their favorite brands of drives, and I am also convinced that all the drive manufacturers get together once a year and decide who's going to have a run of bad drives that year.

However, that said, I will say that, having had probably 50 to 100 drives in teh past 5 years, our experience with failure rates goes like this:

Maxtor -- Failure rate is greater than 50%, almost always after the 1 year warranty expires.

Western Digital - Failure rate very high, probably 40%, but not quite as high as Maxtor. I stopped buying them because the were playing games on the warranty, cutting to 1 year, but now they've extended to 3 again. I still wouldn't touch a WD drive, and have paid as much as 25% more to get an equivalent Seagate.

Seagate -- Only one failure in 4+ years, with several dozen drives. Drives carry a 5 year warranty and are quickly and easily replaced.

Samsung -- only had a few of these, but have never had one fail.

Hitachi -- Were awful when they were IBM, but haven't really used them since the drive operations were sold to Hitachi.
