If so,, what formats does this gadget use for the actual ebooks, im guessing it supports plain text and PDF files but does it have its own file type assocated with it or not?

No, but I'll gladly accept one as a belated birthday present :broccoli:
No... I want one but Amazon decided not to offer it or its ebooks in Canada grrrrrrrrr
And, the only company in Canada that has a good supply of ebook titles doesn't support the Kindle yet.
