    Password Sharing And Non-Adult Sites?

Do any of you folks have any experience running membership based non-adult websites?

If so, have you noticed any significant amount of password sharing on mainstream sites when compared to adult membership sites?

Im guessing the problem may be similar to that in adult but at the same time, so far our experience in the mainstream world really doesnt appear to have brought this issue up for us and from what we can tell, nobody else on mainstream boards really has an issue with this.. At least not that they are posting about.

The reason i ask is that we're finalizing a few new sites we'll be launching shortly and im toying with the idea of getting StrongBox installed on them prior to launch, but im also not 100% if it will be needed and if not, im not really wanting to spend $1000 on StrongBox install if password sharing isnt going to be a major issue for us.

    Regards,

    Lee

I have been involved with some professional organization websites before where password sharing has been discussed.

Neither of the two had serious issues with password sharing but it did ocure.

One site I worked with made it so that your password gave acces to all of your registration information, licensing, and CE. That cut down on sharing and cut BW use too. No one was willing to share their password with people who could access everything including the personal.

i guess it depends on waht your site is about

but in the mainstream world there are boards both free and paid that swap passwords, and rip and upload sites to rapidshare and such. I've seen it happen a lot with the ebook get-rich info stuff. There's also a lot of paper books being turned into PDFs and traded that way, also via torrents.

We've seen some password sharing attempted on non-adult sites that we
protect, but I haven't worked any numbers to see how it compares to adult.
I suspect that like jIgG said it depends partly on the nature of the site. I have
noticed that more expensive sites see more sharing. That only makes sense -
if it costs $50 / month for a membership, people have more reason to steal
access than if it costs $3 / month.

PUMPaul reminded me of another point. Mainstream sites that give access to
more than just content after you log in, such as personal information, are often
under constant brute force attack. Some average three simultaneous attacks
at any given time. Obviously the big ones like Myspace and Yahoo mail have
hundreds of attacks per day. So that's something to think about.

We may be able to offer you a significant price break depending on what you're
doing. Largely this would be because you already have many of your sites
protected with Strongbox and have for a long time, so you're very familiar with it
and will probably need very little tech support and customer service. That's 80%
of the cost of Strongbox - paying for our time doing customer service and tech
support. If they are simple sites we may not need to spend much time on them
and can work out a deal. Come to think of it, you already qualify for a significant
discount based on our published price breaks for larger numbers of sites, and
you're about to hit the top tier for discounts. Shoot us an email or give us a call
and we'll see what we can do.

    Ray,

This actually the same project i contacted you about early last year for a discount on, it kinda got sidelined for a while but now its back on track and we're just kinda evaluating whether we're actually going to need StrongBox from the outset or whether we should add it 'as needed' as bandwidth isnt really a major consideration for these sites, our main concern is password sharing and losing out on sales due to that at the moment.

    Regards,

I don't quite recall what we talked about early last year, but I'd be interested in
a reminder and seeing what we can do for you. We may be able to integrate it
into your system, keeping per site cost low. It might also make sense to just
monitor some of the new sites to see whether password sharing is detected.
If it, we'll know it makes sense to protect the others.
