DRM solutions for Download to Own?

    Hey Gang:

Anyone know of any good DRM solutions for download to own options? It seems Windows Media is the most common but that alienates the whole Mac audience, etc. I was wondering if anyone is aware of something better and/or something for Flash.

    Grrrr, Mike

If its download to own, you should be using DRM.

The whole point of 'download to own' is that there are no restrictions on the content being downloaded, ie, once the surfer downloads it, they own it for as long as they want, without having to 'rebill' to keep viewing it

Agreed.....I am not suggesting they have to rebill for it or pay further, but you don't want to just let them download a Flash file without any DRM that they can then share with the world on a bit torrent site, etc.

Again, download to own means that once they have downloaded the content, they own it, therefore can do whatever they want with it.

If you have concerns about them sharing the files after they have been downloaded, watermark them with your sites urls, that way youll get some residual traffic in the instances where the media is shared around the net.

we have xxxdto.com at one point it was drm protected. we got rid of the drm due to the high chargeback volume. 2 years later now, we have never had a chargeback.
i have learned in my short term of peddling porn no matter how hard you protect your media, someone is right behind you cracking it.
if you google the terms "crack drm" and search into it, there are step by step instructions how to crack it.
if you use flash videos, the user only needs to use firefox, view the source code, they have the full url to the video file. they just copy that into their address bar and download it. then they can use cheap or user friendly software to convert it.
another thing that i have learned is there is a 99% chance every customer is a pirater. people share dvds (i did), people download off limewire and stuff, people think the video is hot and post it on blogs and thats why they exist, so on and so forth.
i have been taught to give up on wasting your energy and to copyright the dvds. it costs $45. if someone steals it, you can sue for damage. i take care of all the copyright stuff here now. that's really your best bet and thats why Titan does so well. FIGHT BACK!
i do apologize, i had an angry moment. content thieves are out everywhere. there is no way to 100% protect your videos.
my boss told me today, its ok to protect the videos. dont waste your energy or sleep over it. make it difficult for the piraters. the harder you make it with the technology out today, the more they will eventually give up and move onto the next site or producer. I don't think in this case you would want DRM. they own it. i would think it is like telling a baby, you can have a lick, but you can't have more than that. the baby will get mad.

be careful with DRM even apple removed it from Itunes.

customers don't like it and will go elsewhere in a lot of cases.

We were faced with this same issue, so we implemented a compromise. What we do on our member site is offer them a streaming Flash video in a large size and then a smaller size wmv file (watermarked) for them to download and save if desired. We've had zero complaints with this.

This is a great way to do it. If your getting no complaints then your doing things right! Best thing to do is poll your customers and ask them questions that get you answers on how they think

Ill post a great link to an adult polling solution in a bit just need to dig up the link
