Explain the .mp4 format

I'm hearing a lot about the .mp4 format lately. I'm not sure I understand it -- tell me if I'm right.

.mp4 format is for mobile devices and works in all three major players (Windows Media Player, Quicktime, RealPlayer). Some are calling it iPod touch or iPhone format, but that's not quite accurate because it works on other similarly sized mobile devices as well.

.mp4 videos are 480 pixels wide, but I dunno how high. So they'd be sub-standard on a regular monitor, but look good on a mobile device.

Did I get that right or am I all wrong?

Yes, partly wrong. MP4 files are container format like MOV. They were not made for mobile devices, just the best format. And are not mobile only format.

It streams like Flash and can be used in most Flash players like flv files. The size can be whatever. They can use the H.264 encoding format too. All our previews on http://www.18andupstuds.com are mp4 format.

Your pages display perfectly on the iPhone Safari browser, but the samples won't "play" when clicked. I assume this is an iPhone issue, right? But when downloaded and imported into iTunes they should play, is that right? Do you know of any format video that'll actually play on the iPhone/Safari?

Yes, the pages are not iphone compatible yet. The players are flash driven for one. I was just showing the pretty mp4s and that they aren't substandard, much better than flv or wmv.

I'm not quite sure what video format plays in the page on an iphone, but I read that object embedded mp4s bring up your iphone's default video player(quicktime?)
