    .xxx Domain Extension Approved?

Official approval has been given for the creation of an internet domain dedicated to pornography.

The board of net overseer Icann gave initial approval for the creation of the .xxx domain at its conference in Brussels.

Icann's approval will kick off a fast-track process to get the porn-only domain set up.

ICM Registry, which is backing the domain, said .xxx would make it easier to filter out inappropriate content.

The decision ends a long campaign by ICM Registry to win approval.

Stuart Lawley, chairman of ICM, welcomed the decision and said it was "great news for those that wish to consume, or avoid, adult content".

So pull your credit cards to save all the .xxx versions of your .com sites before some brokers or your competitors do. It's a license to print money I'm afraid and nothing else.

I'm not even sure you'll have that option. Several articles already state that over 110,000 xxx domains have been reserved~~!!! Like WTF -- how, when and where did that happen???

The industry needs to oppose this.
Those of us with trademarks can protect our names from being used, but allowing them to corral the industry into the ".xxx" domain is just the first very easy step to censorship.

Without us, they can't make it work.

I think those "sold" names are half bullshit, half brokers, and half withhold's by the nic.

(Yes, I meant to say three halves....)

Well, just go to http://www.icmregistry.com/ and have your domain reserved. I just found it now after a google search but it must be there for quite a while (at least before they received approval from ICANN).

I'm absolutely with you on this and would happily ignoring them. However, at the end the customer is the one who's gonna decide if .xxx will be successful. And I'm quite sure if ICM pumps enough money into PR it will be accepted by the paying visitors. And there will be enough companies and individuals that pick the good domains (unless you hold the trademark) which we are ignoring and they will shave off our profits.

So the question is if we can a afford to ignore .xxx domains.

Thanks for that information. It's like all those land speculators buying property east of the fault line in anticipation of having ocean front property ...

That's a sobbering thought, and it does make you sit up and take this whole thing a lot more seriously.

Gee, I wonder why we should be concerned??

Let's take a look at the "benefits" of having an XXX name:

    • The effective labeling of content, so that individuals and search engines know that .xxx websites likely contain adult content, which will allow for simple and effective filtering for those who wish to do so
    • Best Business Practices to provide and promote confidence and certainty in .xxx domains
    • More predictable revenue streams, greater customer retention and fewer complaints for adult entertainment suppliers
    • A credible self-regulated forum for impacted stakeholders to discuss and develop policies relating to online adult entertainment

Right there, at number 1, tells the whole story, now doesn't it?

    How about this....
All you that want to appease these assholes, do the right thing.
    Register your trademarks instead.
Yes, it's expensive at a federal level....but most every state has state trademark registration. In Pennsylvania, you can register a trademark for $50 at the state level. And unless your opponent can assure he's not using YOUR trademark in YOUR state, he's got a problem, now doesn't he? So does the registrar.

I expect one of the attorneys will chime in here, and say oh yea, but a state trademark won't protect you federally....blah, blah, blah.

But when the rubber hits the road, will the registrar want that fight? Will the squatter spend the thousands to defend?
No. Chances are, at your cease and desist, they'll fold.

So, for all you "appeasers," Here's a way for you to save face, do the right thing, and save money......all at the same time.
(And, as a side benefit, get yourself a little extra protection)

    You're welcome.
