    I Wonder? Spam Email

Ok so I'm sick to death of all the spam email I get, I use outlook and I have limited success with their junk email preventer and also have Spam Inspector.

A lot of spam is still getting through and I'm really starting to get peeved :boom:. Anyone got any brilliant solutions or programs that you guys use - short of changing my email address, I'm really not sure what I can do!

    Cheers,

    Allan

I hear ya... getting around 500 junk mails everyday. I used to filter my mails with outlook... but one day i was working with some paris hilton sites and my client's emails would always get filtered and deleted and it happened oftenly so i've decided to only use the best techniques that works for me, deleting mails manually.. takes 1 minute but at least, nothing is passing me.

    DAMN FUCKING EMAILS!
The ones i hate are the ones who are sent from my own emails... i hate that

Well on top of everything else I have I do have one huge rule in my outlook rule wizard. I called it Spam. The way I have it set is any email that comes in with specific words in the body will be moved to a spam folder.

Right now my list is huge in there. I have many different variations of the words viagra (vi@gra, viagr@, v/iagra), vicodin (vic0din, etc), Mortgage and many others. It still doesn't get them all but my morning download has gone from 800-900 emails (only one of my email addresses with 90% crap) to 250. The rest go ito my spam folder. But I do check them before I delete just in case of strays.

As I get new variations I add them to my spam rule...

Not the best approach but it helps for now.

Set a rule up that will only allow certain words to get through.

so your rule words might be:

    The names of your sponsors
    The names of your sites
    Family members names
    Etc

That should ensure that your spam gets cut down a lot as you are basically doing exactly the opposite of what spammers think you are doing.. blokcing certain words

The 'allow' words list is going to be a lot smaller too

    Regards,

    Lee

For a number of my accounts, I have started logging in directly to the server's web based mail so that I can delete the 100 or so spam messages a day before downloading them.

I am using Outlook XP and it does a pretty good job of spam filtering with its built in filters.

    cheers,
    Luke

    Hey Allan,

Just so happens we launched our new software this week - SpamCease. SpamCease is a challenge-response system similar to the subscription based solutions out there (spamarrest, spamwize, etc..), except the main difference is that ours is a PHP script suite that runs on YOUR server. So there are absolutely NO subscription fees to maintain, and the amount of local and POP3 mailboxes you can use are unlimited.

If you have your own dedicated server, or even virtual hosting on a unix/linux machine capable of running PHP scripts, then this is a perfect solution. And with the POP3 module, you can pull from any other outside server as well and maintain the same protection as your local server mail.

Our site has full details and FAQ's about the program which will give you a much deeper understanding of what it's all about. The site address is: http://www.spamcease.com/

And if you're interested, we have a fully-functional two week trial available here: http://www.spamcease.com/cgi-bin/download/down.pl?ID=3

Any questions, just hit us up on the contact page of the site

Thanks for all your suggestions guys, sounds like I should persevere with the current system and the outlook rule idea, once again this proves that this is the best webmaster board out there.

    Cheers,

    Allan

Why can't the email address be changed and inform the people you know about the new address?

I also used to get an incredible amount of spam. I was very fed up wasting so much time deleting spam I decided to try a spam filter. I tried the software at http://www.cloudmark.com/ and is has been nothing short of amazing. It adds a spam folder to your outlook or outlook express and about 99% of spam hits this folder. I don't even check it anymore because it is so on target for grabbing the spam. It has saved me SO much time and headaches. There is a 30 day free trial and once you try it I think you will want to buy it. The price was worth every penny and very reasonable. I hope that helps.

actually, outlook xp comes with the spam filter rules built into it, you do very little work except for every once in a while when one slips thru all you do is right click and ban the bugger!

    cheers,

    Hi Cash,

With the sheer volume of people who have my email address (and I want them to have it, it would be hard to change plus there's the whole stationery and business cards angle as well.

    Cheers,

    Allan

I second this one. Cloudmark SpamNet works great. Only problem I'm having with it is since I've reformatted and reinstalled outlook express. It still works for filtering out spam but only when i press the button to do so. I'm working with them to figure out why it won't filter upon downloading of mail anymore. Other than that it works great on catching spam.

Speaking of spam. It looks like I sent this email to myself. UGH! If anyone gets this email it is not from me.

We use bayesian spam filter Spam Bully for Outlook and Outlook Express. Spam Bully is a simple yet elegant solution to a growing problem. In our tests, we found this program to be amazingly powerful. We always thought that a Bayesian solution to spam was the best solution. SpamBully proved that when done right, whitelisting works better especially against email spoofing.
