HD Video Encoding

For my new site, I am planning to give members the ability to download HD quality video in both WMV and MOV formats. I encoded all my videos based on the standard settings of my video encoding software for WMV - HD and MOV - HD. I am now working out that based on these settings, the MOV file is 1.3 GB and will take a user more than an hour (and possibly a lot longer) to download! :-0

Does anyone who offers this to their users have advice on what settings (resolution, frame rate, bit rate) I can use to encode the videos so that they look high quality / HD but don't take an inordinate amount of time to download?

I should also mention that although all new videos are now being shot in HD, the majority of my old content that I am encoding was not.

What size is too large a download video file for a HD (1280x720) resolution file?

I would say use either 1280x720 or 960X540 which are both used pretty often by the industry. I would say a 15mins clip in 1280x720 shouldn't be bigger than 4-600MB. Don't compromise too much on the Frame Rate and the Data Rate either. We don't want to see pixelated dicks...well unless you are doing Asian porn we are used to that! :p

We don't use MOV files, but yours still seems large.

Our video sizes are for a 16 minute video in mp4 format, wmv files are slightly smaller are:

1920x1080 = 732mb
1280x720 = 333mb

I use a formula to figure out the bitrate for each video size. I try to get the formula to get near 0.095 for the best viewing.

For example, the 1920 video

(Pixel height * Pixel width * Frame Rate * 0.095) = Bit Rate for video

(1920 * 1080 * 29.97 * 0.095) = 5903850.24

Then divide by 1000 to get the final bit rate in Kbps. = 5904Kbps to encode that size video.

It would be best to try to stick under 800 MB .. or less for a standard length porn clip.
Frame Rate and Data Rate are super important as well as making sure it is de-interlaced.

Software only encoding is good but you may want to invest in some hardware assisted encoding cards like Digital-Rapids. They can squeeze even more quality in a small video file. It also will speed up encoding allowing you to batch encode in multiple formats and faster processing.

I'm looking at a really good video 18 minutes long.
It is 1920 x 1080, h.264/AAC codec, .mov format, bit rate is 4224 ...
File size is only 575 MB

It takes a lot of trail and error to offer the best download for the best file size.
As long as the video is clear, the fast action shots are not pixelated, and the sound is tweaked... all will be good.

Downloads are pretty easy .. but remember, all rules change when you start to stream. You normally need to sets of videos. One for download and one for streaming as there are many parts of the world and US that still have slow connections.
