    I just discovered layers!

Ok... I knew they were possible with WYSIWYG editors, but I never bothered to do any thing with them. But I wanted to frame a table that had images in the cells... but I also wanted to overlap some of the images with the frame. Very cool effect!

Any do's or don'ts I need to worry about? Oh god... I'm gonna get carried away with them, I just know it!

i was layer obsessed early on they i forgot about them completely.

make sure you align them so they work in both IE and other browsers, if you do browser testing. sometimes layers tend to wander off in the page margins, at least with me

There is definately a lot of room for fuckups when it comes to tables and overlapping them. I'm always surprised to see large sites that haven't checked their cross browser/resolution compatibility, but that's where problems will come up. If you aren't careful when you are putting together one big image made up of smaller ones, you'll end up with holes that only show up for some people. Just make sure with any design, you test it on more than one computer in more than browser, in at least the top few resolutions. Other than that, just try resizing and full-screening your design when it's done to make sure everything stays in place.

Just be sure to do a browser preview in IE, Netscape and Opera -- and make sure your overlap is being displayed correctly :groovy:

Can certainly appreciate the rush feeling ... I get it too whenever I figure out something new I can do with my programs, sorta like discovering buried treasure!

I don't think I've ever seen layers used on a porn site. Does anyone have some urls of sites using layers?

Is there any way to lock a layer into a table or do they always float on top of the page?

What web design program are you using? I know tables can be controlled thru CSS...

can I see an example of a site anywhere that is using layers
so I can understand what a layer is ??

is it like taking multiple images and stacking them in
a rotation to animate them as in a .gif file ??

I'm using Namo Web Editor... yeah, I know, never heard of it. It's like a cross between Dreamweaver and Frontpage. I just can't get my head around Dreamweaver.

Bell... Layers are a really cool concept. You can actually overlap different elments on your page, for example, they might just overlap a corner of an image, or you might put a .gif or .png with a transparent area right on top of another image. Also, text can float on top of an image without making the image a cell or table background. The possibilities are pretty exciting.

How long have layers been around?

Ok... this is what I have so far... http://cowboys.deluxepass.com/
It's still early in the design process, so be nice!

As you can see, the page hugs the left margin. I hate that! I would like to have it centered, but I can't figure out a way to have the layers float with the table(s) on different screen resolutions.

Is there a way to give layers relative postioning?

All of this because I just HAD to have the table frames overlapping the pictures... hardly worth it, really.

Layers have been around for a while. I've never used them.

Apparently though, you use them put your graphic content up top so it's visually better, but they can also serve up the textual content closer to the top of the page for search engines.

I can't be bothered learning one more new thing these days.

Wondering where you picked up content that allows licensing to show these hon -- have a cowboy site in progress and have been looking for a couple movies to add to it... care to share your source?
