Password Software?

Does anyone have any suggestions for securely storing passwords?
With so many affiliate programs, servers, emails, ect, we have literally hundreds of usernames and passwords to keep track of.

Text files are a pain and not secure, and relying on your browser to store passwords is not great either.

Any suggestions would be great.

Have you checked out RoboForm? It does password management, generates random passwords, saves all passwords in encrypted & secured files, etc.

I use roboform2go to store all my logins on a USB key that I take with me wherever I go. Its stored as encrypted data on the USB key and you only need to remember one password for the key itself, then all others are auto-filled for you. Plus roboform2go comes with a free copy of goodsync2go, which automatically sync's your password file to a secure, encrypted online backup service. I have had a USB key go corrupt on me and have had to restore all my logins, so I know it works!

You can get a free unlimited 30-day trial at their website of either of the above programs, and the full cost is really cheap for a lifetime license.

If you are a left brain kind of person, good with math, puzzles, etc.,
you may like the way we used to do it. We had a rule, a formula, for
choosing a password based on the domain name, therefore we didn't
have to remember any passwords, we just had to remember HOW
we come up with passwords. Kind of like pig latin, I suppose.


Example rule:
The password is Emo, followed by the number of characters in the domain
name, followed the first and last characters in the name.

Example derivation of a passwords:
gaywidewebmasters has 17 characters, and the first and last two characters
are "ga" and "rs", so the password is "Emo17gars".

for yahoo.com, yahoo has five characters, the first and last two are are "ya"
and "oo", so the password is Emo5yaoo.

I wrote a little script that did the passwords for me, to save me the 10 seconds
of mental effort required, but even if the script got deleted I knew the rule by heart.

We have since changed our system, to select one of several predefined passwords
based on the level of security required, but the 'pig latin" approach worked
fairly well.
