Man Gets MacBook Stolen, Tracks It, Starts Photo Blog

On March 21, Joshua Kaufman’s MacBook was stolen from his Oakland apartment. Luckily, he had installed a ‘Find My MacBook’-esque application called Hidden just days prior. For those not aware, Hidden allows users to track down stolen Macs with the ability to remotely take (and save) screenshots via the computer’s iSight camera while in use by the assailant.

Armed with this 21st-century technology and with little news of getting his MacBook back, Kaufman started the Tumblr blog “This Guy Has My MacBook” on which he posts the collected screenshots of his new MacBook’s “owner”. Joshua notes that he has contacted police over the issue, but they can’t arrest the crook due to lack of resources.

Meanwhile, Kaufman gets to watch this guy’s every move, remotely and without him knowing, as he awaits for Jean Quan, mayor of Oakland, to get involved.

It's kind of disheartening to think that it takes a call from the media to get the Oakland Police department to do the job the public pays them to do.
IMO the media should probably be changing the story to focus on that now that he has it back, and the Police department involved should be thoroughly embarrassed by their complete ineptitude.

Have to say though, I did wonder if this was a guerrilla marketing tactic for the software.

Interesting software it is too, but it would make me wonder who else might be tapping in to watch.

Yeah, so did I ... if they have an affiliate program and he used it in that story page he'd be making a ton of $$ as this definitely went viral. News stations picked it up and were broadcasting the story last night.

note: not seeing an affiliate program for Hidden, so we'll have to assume it's a legit heist and recovery.

LOL, in our business, it sure puts a twist on the "hidden cam" niche.

That was awesome... unless the victim censored himself though it doesn't look like this guy did much porn surfing...

The only way this could have been better is if the thief was also a **** and got nabbed with the proof...

Have you ever been to Oakland? A stolen Macbook is the least of their problems, with the lowest actual assistance return to the community.
