Search Engine Wars: Google down, Yahoo up

Internet demographics company Experian Hitwise released its search engine stats report this week, showing that Google lost a bit of ground to Yahoo. The stats in the first table below compare US searches for June and July.

The second graph shows success rates with the big search engines, and shows that Yahoo! Search and Bing achieved the highest success rates in July 2011. Success rates measure if searches executed resulted in a visit to a Website.

Once again, this data is pointing to the fact that we should all be working a bit harder on optimizing for Yahoo / Bing powered searches!

    Interesting stats. Thanks Luke.

I have certainly noticed Bing creeping up in my traffic analytics reports, so this doesn't surprise me at all. And I don't seem to have to do much in order to get indexed with them either.

Yahoo is still a bit behind for me, so I guess I should do something about that. Is there a webmaster's area for Yahoo for optimizing sites to index with them better?

Yahoo results depend on your country of origin, as Bing started powering Yahoo in the USA and Canada about a year ago, and 15 other countries earlier this month with Europe and Asia next.

Here's the latest article I could find about this:
the roll out is moving on, Bing is now behind Yahoo search in 17 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada (English), Chile, Columbia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Spain, the United Kingdom, United States, and Venezuela.

Other countries in Europe, which has only recently started to be included, and Asia, where there have been no Bing transitions, will be added to the list in the coming months Yahoo says.
