    How is one to compete....

Ok, as some of you already know, we are a brand new studio. More than likely going out of business in the next week or so.

A little background WHY I started this business. My boyfriend of 9 years has duchenne muscular Dystrophy, which is a nueromuscular disease, I tell everyone "he's one of jerrys kids" - its a muscle wasting disease that affects all muscles, voluntary or involuntary, and will eventually kill him. He is 28 now, many don't make it past 25. I wanted to do something for a living that either we could do together even with his lack of ability to move (he is in a power wheelchair and is dependant on others for virtually everything), or something that I could make a decent living with, but not have to be gone all the time. The result was he and I starting a porn studio.

    Now onto my rant....

I have been recruiting models for the past several months, shot a few.scenes, made some public appearances with models, all seems good...well its not. Tonight I loose 4 models that I had already had scheduled to film next weekend to Helix, because he offered them more than what I am (by a considerable amount). This is not the first time this has happened, it happened about a month or so ago as well. Then just a little bit ago I lost two more to twinksgethot.com as they offered them more than we were.

My question is how the hell is a small time operation supposed to survive with all these heavy jitters taking us down?

Content production is a hard job, I have worked with quite a few content studios over the years and most say the same thing: models are unreliable! I am sorry to hear your guys are getting poached, I hope other production companies drop in to make some suggestions to help you out.

1)Get amateur or guys not really into the modeling scene so others do not know about them. Actually will pay off big time if you find a true hottie and get him to at least do his very first shoot with you or even become exclusive with you.
2)And most importantly, these days you really have to carve out a very UNIQUE niche for yourself..something no one else is doing (or not doing it well..or very little if at all). It might be just a different take with the same type of models (twinks for example), but something that makes your work stand out that models will want to be a part of.
3)If all else fails..get them drunk as hell and start filming!! Just kidding! (Sorta)

Based on following what you have said on how you model scout are great ideas and do not get discouraged by that.

We've ran into the very same situations.

We prefer to only have first timers. The reasons why I we want first timers is we can mold the models to how we want them. We've had big time models, we've had first time models. The big time models come into your studio already molded and like to perform on film as they did prior to coming to you.

We do not have a "set standard" of models. The type of models we get are the amateur boy next door types. If they're muscular like Falcon, we move on and actually don't work with them. We work with twinks, daddies, slim, all ages over 21.

Go for that. It will work for you. Of course we want hot guys. If they're hot to you, go for the goal.

In a club, if they are the S/M types (Stand and model) don't bother.
In a club setting if they are flirty, smily, appear as if they aren't full of themselves, go for it.

I always like to open conversation when I am public scouting with a hello, how are you, what's going on with you, would you like a drink on me? They'll stand near you while they have at least part of the drink you just bought for them. Be talkative to them. Be nice to them. Don't flirt, it scares them off . If you ask them for a drink and they say, "no, I'm okay." Back away otherwise they will end up shy, or what have you. That's when you hand them a card, tell them your a model scout, if your interested call me.

When they are having their drink with you, ask them "Have you ever modeled in adult films before?" If they say yes... Go from there to the goal. If they say no... Talk to them like you've known them forever. Your personality will make them comfortable. Smile, don't look or act or speak like they are a slab of meat. Tell them to give you a call if they are interested. Be very basic, simple. Talk to them a bit.
IF they are interested, tell them, "Give me a call, we'll set something up and discuss everything over lunch or dinner." If they call you, 9 times out of 10 they'll do it. Meet them somewhere, not at a restraunt. This way if they flake out your not waiting around forever. If they meet you for dinner, you've got the model.
    This is what we do.

But we also fly a lot of our guys out from other areas of the country for a weekend shoot.

Try that, that's what I / We do. Try to stick with first time models. You'll have more of a success ratio. Once a model works with 2 or more studios, they are then in it primarily for the money. Don't ever go bankrupt for a model.

That's actually a great idea. Two or Three times a year, we throw a hotel party for all the guys who have modeled for us previously. We do a cookout, we bring in drinks... By the end of the night, we have a sex party going on. Always have at least one other camera man with you! ALWAYS! We all know what happens when alcohol is around and a bunch of hot guys. It mixes VERY WELL . That's how we've done many / most of our sex party films.

BEFORE ANY ALCOHOL is supplied or even offered. Get the model release and the ID. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS. Tell them if they want to get frisky later, you'll pay them for the video(s). Which we do. It's more of a get together, but if something happens... We pay them $200 for the weekend. Hell, they're getting to meet up with their buddies, free food, a weekend that's geared for them to getaway on your expense and free for them. They'll do it cheap.

If you lost a model to Helix, you haven't lost anything, you've actually saved.

The more often a model is on camera, the less valuable he becomes. The more that a viewer has seen a model suck, get sucked, fuck and get fucked, the less interesting he becomes. Been there, done it, seen it.

    It's called being over-exposed.

Now, you can be a big studio and have exotic locations, hotel rooms, Hollywood Hills houses, have a big studio brand and director name, and get away with using and over using the same model over and over, pairing him with new talent, but not for small studios.

I can shoot 3 videos with a model over a year, and each successive video will earn less than the first.

The second answer to your scenario is don't wait so long to do the deal. Recruit and shoot today.

Be careful about the alcohol. Make sure your model release contains at least one recital that the model has not been supplied any controlled substance (including alcohol) by you before signing the model release, and that he is not under the influence of any drug or alcohol.

Beyond that, if a controlled substance is provided during the duration of the shoot, and something occurs that would cause a health or accident risk, or create a incident of ridicule, you could be the subject of legal action.
