IBM's new brain-like chips

PCWorld reports that IBM has announced success in its 6-year endeavors with DARPA to create new brain-like chip designs!

"The prototype chips will give mind-like abilities for computers to make decisions by collating and analyzing immense amounts of data, similar to humans gathering and understanding a series of events, said Dharmendra Modha, project leader for IBM Research. The experimental chips, modeled around neural systems, mimics the brain's structure and operation through silicon circuitry and advanced algorithms."

The report goes on to day that IBM has made 2 prototype brain-like chips, using its 45-nanometer technology, where these chips have the ability to mimic the brain's ability to spike neurons and synapses. In other words, they can dynamically rewire their synapses based on their inputs, just like an actual brain.

The breakthrough was received so positively that IBM received another $21M grant from DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) to continue its research.
