Okay so the last few weeks ive been trying to get another of our message forums back up to speed however im beginning to realize that this forum is becoming more about 'fun' than about business and that is definately not the direction we want it to take so..
Do you folks have any suggestions as to how we can change the direction of the forum to a more business orientated group rather than a joking, laughing, chatting type of group?

As I see it, this board has the best of both worlds.
Yes, there is alot of fun and joking here...however, there is loads of great serious, work related, gay related, webmaster information here as well.
There are so many other boards out there that are "all" bs, jokes, kidding arond and not informational at all.
Most webmasters work their assees off and a few "really good" boards are where they like to come to get away from the "work", just to have fun, but still have it be "work" related.
When I first joined here I was so impressed that it had both!
So, I guess what I'm saying is that I don't fully understand what you're saying......long round about way of saying it eh?!
I just think/feel that every webmaster board needs an area where webmaster can go to to have fun, kid around, share whatever and still have a very serious side as well....I think this board has that already!
Oh, and I wanted to add. I'm also a member of a coin (roman coin) collectors board...what a bunch of "stuffed shirts"! Hardly any fun at all...no jokes, not an area where anyone feels safe making a "fun" post.
Yes, it's HIGHLY informational...however, many new people have left because no one there know's how to have fun either.
Just needs to be a good balance I guess =)

if it's the forum i'm thinking it is, you have three problems:
1. the people the board is for generally tend toward non business talk on their own.
2. your main forum should be the business topics forum, but it isn't. some of the forum topics shouldn't even be there as they tend to make the people on the board think less business and more gender issues.
3. need more regular posters.
if it's not the board i'm thinking of, disregard this post. if it's the one lee asked me to post at, my opinion would be to pay someone a couple hundred bucks a month to keep things moving over there and remove that it's a man's world forum entirely.

Yep im currently doing some additional things now, just removed the seperate adult industry forum and merged that with the general forum and ama lso about to remove the male specific foum and do the same too
Its crazy actually, things that typically tend to work well on almost every other community forum on the web dont work well on this site

personally I see this forum as a get to know you - and the icq's and business happen behind the scenes.
only other way is to create a section that is specifically for traffic, news etc. and those posting content and deals (which is why people need to look at announcements etc.)
Outside of putting a FREE TO ASK section where webmasters can create a thread asking for content or traffic - they can do it also here.
Perhaps you can do a SPOTLIGHT ON section or thread where once a week you promote certain companies and the features / benefits of using their services.

You may want to try and pay a few people to start dialogues on business topics. Maybe it would only take a month or two and the rest would follow. Might be worth a try. But I think 3 or 4 posters would be needed or it won't seem like a trend.
I think the recent contests created more frivolous threads. Now that they're over, may be it will settle down.

If you want to change the direction of a board, I would simply write some posts that are more in line with the kinds of things you'd like to see.
There are always going to be a certain percentage of any board's populations that wants to "please the teacher" (or suck up to the moderator) as it were.
Once you capture the attention of those people, they'll start posting likewise.
There must be a couple of people on that list who have been contributing the kind of stuff you're looking for. Send them a PM, tell them you appreciate their efforts. People like to be stroked, poeple like to be noticed, and people like to hear from the "big guy" at the top. So, a nod could go a long way to getting current posters working harder at generating more of the same good stuff.

it's a women's board, and i've never seen a women's board that covered as much business as a male board. the catch is, if a bunch of men go over to post business, it will sort of make not a women's board...
