Believe it or not, this week marks the 10th anniversary of both the Apple iPod and of Microsoft's Windows XP.

Apple first released its "cigarette package" size portable music player on 23 October 2001, leading a new era of personal audio players and quickly snapping up 92% of the US MP3 music player market.

Two days later, Microsoft's Windows XP officially launched on 25 October 2001. XP has only just lost its title 'world's most popular desktop operating system' recently to Windows 7 (Win7 currently holds 40.18% of the market, with Windows XP only just behind).

So happy anniversary to these two great icons in computing history!
