Do 'Ugly' Sites Sell Better In Your Opinion?

Wondered what you all thought about this?

Ive seen sites built over the years that in all honesty i havent promoted very much because i didnt like the 'look and feel' of the tours but i just had a conversation with a webmaster on AIM who told me that some of his best converting sponsors sites are those with what he called 'ugly' tours.

Have you noticed anything similar?

I have noticed that amateur looking sites tend to sell well. Some of our best tours we "designed down", tried to make them look amateurish. But maybe it has to do with what type of content you have. Amateur sites for amateur content, high end sites for glossy content.

do ugly sites sell better? not for me. AMATEUR sites sell amateur content very very well. they don't have to be ugly, just simple enough to lend credence to the "amateur".

really nicely made sites can also sell very well. it sort of depends on what you're selling and the design.

probably depends on if they are trying to "sell" something

Yes ugly sells. Obviously it can be taken too far. I think of it more as simple sells.

I see so many sites out there obviously put together by designers. Unfortunately it seems these desginers tend to design more for other desginers rather than for the surfer.

I don't know, but a couple of months back I had a series of pictures and the guy was butt ugly. I couldn't figure out where I was the day I bought these things. It was one of those lame sets where they put the guy in a shirt that says "Marines" and call it military.

I thought and thought and thought. What the hell am I going to call this gallery? What the hell am I going to say about him. Finally, I just decided to call it "Ugly Guy."

I Googled it and checked it with Good Keywords and a lot of people are searching for "ugly guys" so I thought, what the hell, it's better than another "big dick" site.

Within 24 hours, he sold a membership.

Oh and BTW, in the copy, I wrote about how "I" like having sex with ugly guys because they try harder.

i guess you guys don't mean ugly sites, you mean simple sites. thehun isn't ugly to me - it's simply got no design past a general layout. i've seen lots of ugly sites and they don't seem to sell for me - but simple ones do.

i know lots of ugly guys who get laid a lot. i don't know that they get laid MORE than hot guys, but they sure do get some ;-)

imho, the hun is as big as he is due to the length of time on the net, and being the first to link past the tours into the galleries of small paysites... thus starting a whole new idea for marketing... anyways, point is a site looking like the hun would likely not do good without feeding it a huge amount of traffic in today's climate.

I think Basschick said it best that amateur sites sell amateur content well. and like it or not, alot of the content out there really is amateurish, even though they tout it as professional. Thus, a more amateurish look will generally work better for most of the content that is out there.

For example, I designed this site a while back, that as a designer who has gained more skills since then I am kind of embarrased to say I designed it, BUT even without being updated for about a year, it STILL generates sign-ups, just got one this morning actually. The only reason we keep the signup page open is because a new member would also get access to 10 other sites, so no sense in feeling like the surfer is shortchanged by the model they signed up to see not updating anymore. http://www.coracumplay.com/main.html

Like Gel said, alot of designers tend to design to impress other designers and webmasters, not the surfer. Myself, included... though I do try not to do that, I think it's almost human nature to want to impress ones peers.
