No More Music CDs After Next Year

Side Line Music Magazine reported that major recording labels are planning to drop music CD production by the end of 2012 and will change to digital downloads only. The only CD-format releases that will continue will be limited edition specials, distributed primarily through Amazon (which is already the biggest CD retailer worldwide).

i will miss CDs but honestly, I think I may buy a handful a year these days and those CDs are usually special releases only. When was the last time you bought a CD?

wow, good question. I haven't personally bought one for myself in a number of years, but I also don't download music from the net either. Any new cd's were Christmas or birthday gifts.

I did just buy myself a used Sony 300 disc changer and receiver combination, so I suppose when I tire of listening to my current music library I might miss not buying one at the store. But I have a feeling Time Life will have those decade hits info-mercial CD's available for some years to come!

I start and end just about every day with digital music (thank you Spotify) but I still like the idea of having some music in tangible form. However, as I say that, I too have to think about the last CD I bought. I think it was the latest (and as it turns out last) R.E.M. album. That is getting on to close to a eight months ago now? Wow, and I am a music nut.

my last purchase was annie lennox over 4 years ago and then my cd player in the car got jacked up and it would not play or open. so it and 5 other cds are currently stuck in my car. toyota says they have to take the radio out and ship it to the manufacturer to fix it or open it up so i haven't done anything about it. so then i started playing with an ipod somebody gave. now i just do pandora at work. i too have a 200 sony disc player at home that i guess i need to load into an ipod. i guess at some point i need to catch up with technology!

Oh, I hadn't even considered that option! :eureka:

I just got Che' the cassette adapter to run her Sanza MP3 player in the car for her birthday. I think I'll be adding another SD Card or two to her stocking this year! :Inspired:

Good thread! I can see why a company would back out of CD sales and saw it coming eons ago, when itunes was declared the world's #1 music retailer. The only time I ever buy CD's is when I want to support artists who are not up on their digital game (to THEIR disadvantage, however). Other than that, I buy my music online or just bump it, via Spotify (like Sarah).

From an indy artist standpoint: I also never really was into spending the capital to distribute CDs and always had more success online than when I did decide to press CDs.
For an independent artist, getting CDs pressed professionally can take a HUGE chunk out of your album budget. That money could be spent on the promotional campaign! :gossip:

I only buy CD's for the plastic boxes they come in , it has nothing to do with the quality of the music and/or the fanciful album artwork which does not come with a digital download. :p

I've got some invites for Google Music Beta for anyone in the US who is interested. Upload up to 20000 of your own songs for free. Works like a charm, for me.

Wow, I am probably one of the few who buys a lot of CDs (and vinyl records).

I understand they need to adapt and make this change, but it's a shame!

wow. i knew this day would come, but not so soon! although i haven't purchased or even played a cd in a couple of years, it's kinda sad

my step-dad was out of work last summer and decided to rip both of our entire cd collections to mp3! it was awesome. There were like 800 albums between the two of us. Awesome collection now. Ended up selling my cd's on craigslist for $100. . End of an era. wild.

It was bound to happen, just like the death of vinyl. I always enjoyed Vinyl much more then CDs. Nowadays though I pretty much only use itunes or create playlists on youtube to listen to. The last CD's I bought were some strange Japanese electronic bands that were selling at a flea market in Japan for about .50 cents each.

vinyl is not dead! :war: , I just bought Oscar de la hoya (Boxer) extended club remix of "Run To Me" ( BEE GEE's ) - LOL

I do have to say the better remixes of some songs are available on Vinyl only , Christina Aguilera's "Candy Man" and "How To Burlesque" are fantastic!
