Hitachi ships world's first 4TB drives

Hitachi has started shipping and selling their new 4TB Deskstar 5K hard disk drive, making it the first in the world to ship drives this big. The new disk sports a speed of 5,900RPM, a 6Gbps SATA 3 interface, and the same 32MB of cache as its 2 and 3TB siblings.

In other disk news, a recent advance in platter data density means we will soon start seeing up to 6TB of disk space per platter. Its possible to get 5 platters into a 3.5" drive, which means that by this time next year we may be seeing 30TB single drives!

Looks like a really nice drive and fast too, how long do you think it will take for them to drop in price. There is no way you could conceive backing it up on to floppies

floppies LOL!! there's a blast from the past. I wouldn't count on this one going down in price for a while as it was just released and is the only one of its kind available, but I actually think that's a pretty good price as most 1TB disks are about $99 these days, so you get 4x for only 3.5x the price!
