One of the original file sharing 'direct download' sites MegaUpload has been shut down by the FBI and the owners have been arrested.

"The US Justice Department said that Megaupload's two co-founders Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and Mathias Ortmann were arrested in Auckland, New Zealand along with two other employees of the business at the request of US officials. It added that three other defendants were still at large."

The feds charged the site's founders with violating piracy laws. Copyright holders have accused MegaUpload with over $500 million in lost revenues due to it distributing pirated copyright materials.
