    Link Lists

Ted and I are about to voyage into the land of link lists. We've bought a script and we'll launch something within a couple of weeks. It'll cater to the bear, hairy men, real men, leather, and bareback niches.

If you could offer us one or two pieces of advice on running an effective and efficient link list what would that be?

    Cheers

    Well for my advice...

    - Review submissions on a daily basis, letting them pile up not only makes for a lot of work, but your submitting webmasters don't deserve to wait.

    - Be tough when you have to. Some webmasters, as you mentioned in your other thread, will try to cheat. When you know someone is cheating WHACK 'EM and let the people you know how have link lists about them.

    - Get to know your good submitters and work with them.

    - Don't be afraid to experiment. Sometimes making new ads or updating designs can be fun and lucrative.

    - And, most importantly have fun with it. You're going to see a lot of NEW things LOL

    My best,
    Gary-Alan

I would like to see a link list that actually has CONSUMER traffic visiting it. I've wasted a hell of a lot of time submitting to link lists that are only seen by other webmasters.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been hearing rumors that search engines are becoming less interested in sites that are only linked to bullshit link lists.

In starting a link list you obviously want to fill it with your own banners going to programs that make you money. My suggestion is to make sure you promote your site to consumers so you make money and the webmasters who submit to you see some traffic from it.

Or maybe you just like the thought of: "Getting webmasters to submit..." ;-)

I dont check links every day
I leave some in the queue so I have fillers if there's a day where there's not enough sites submitted or I've declined at lot of sites
And I review from the back to the front - oldest submitted sites first.

I'm very picky, people get mad at me often for not being included.

If I smell stolen content, those old fugly newsgroup pictures, site gets declined. Even sites that make galleries out of amateur guys that took pics of themselves - not always but most always decline them.

You're going to have to browse your link DB often looking for dead links, some people switch their sites after getting approved. Or take down your recip and leech traffic.
One dude I cought was submitting sites and a month later he'd forward to ads.

    INCLUDE AVS SITES!

    No freehosts.

Allow middle page ads (fpa's) on AVS sites.

No recips necessary Just crawl my hubsites or the AVS new lists and automatically add my sites like HH, MP2000 and Sinbad

And let me second Jigg on no stolen content.

yeah, and if you're going to reject a site, explain why... often it's something they can and will fix.. but then keep tabs on them.. people will cheat you any way they can.

Amen! If you knew me, you'd know I can't "list" anything. You put a keyboard in my hands and I'm off and writing. So when I said "link list" I use the word loosely. This thing is going to be a clearinghouse of everything hairy.

Thanks for your input. I'm totally onboard with that idea. I want this site to be a destination, the place people go to find out what's happening in the world of hairy men.

    Cheers

    No freehosts.

This is a good one, I forgot about those suckers. (Glad I posted this thread.) Is there are list of known freelosts floating around somewhere? I've seen something over at SindbadBookmarks, so I'll have to check it out.

And let me second Jigg on no stolen content.

This is an interesting one. How do you guys figure I manage this one? I know the obvious stuff, but really if I wanted to use a piece of software, I could leeched all of xstr8guy's pictures off his site, and in two days launch a new site with his content. And if it ain't watermarked, how would anyone know it wasn't mine? I'm not clear on how I would be able, as a link list owner, to detect those kinds of scenarios. Thoughts?

Don't get me wrong, I'm big on copyright. I was a writer before I was a web designer before I was an adult webmaster.

I like running a clean ship and I don't want to help out thieves. It's actually refreshing to hear people raising this issue. It has a similar vein to the thread I started yesterday.

    Thanks guys,
    Dzinerbear

I was thinking along the lines of the more obvious pics, you know, Titan, Colt, etc.

from the comment you made of:

"So when I said "link list" I use the word
loosely. This thing is going to be a clearinghouse
    of everything hairy. "

sounds more like you want a Hairy Bear Resource site
that also offers a Link Traffic Trade List...

are you just wanting to swap links
or wanting to swap traffic via a traffic management script ??

some things you might want to consider on who you accept:

no illegal content (as in ***********, rape, etc)

no warez or password traders sites permitted

webmaster / site owner must be at least age 18 to participate

no sponsor banners permited - FROM the other webmasters
as THEIR banner being used to bring traffic from you to them

exclude or limit the number of pop ups permitted

    no redirects of link submitted

no blind links directly from your LL to sponsors

you might want to consider an automated letter going out
to the webmasters once their link has been accepted...
and in that letter thank them and encourge them to subit
other sites they have... and have one or two small promos
in that letter for sponsors that you like that week
with your ref. aff. link attached - - - might get
some webmasters to sign up under you for those programs
    that way...

and maybe plan a get-togehter occassionally for the
webmasters that are part of your LL... to make it like
    a support group...

I don't currently have a list of the freehosts out there...
you DO need to exclude those... and you might be able
to find some via a google search - as if you were someone
needing freehosting - how/where would you go to get it ?? etc..

or start a thread somewhere - requesting suggestions of
where to get freehosting... and exclude all the company
    names you get... LOL...

if you do find a list or compile one...
I would very much like a copy of it...
if I find one I'll get it to you as well...

    I can be reached via:

    this board - PM

    eMail:
    evelyn937 (at) lycos.com

    ICQ: 119-325-350

and if you get bogged down and need to hire help..
you KNOW where to go FIRST for that.... (wink)

    good luck with everything...
