VHS Or DVD? What Would You Choose?

If you were going to be producing adult movies which format would you choose to utilize for sale?

Do you think that VHS or DVD will sell better in stores?

As it stands im looking into DVD format pureply because everyone and their neighbor seems to have a DVD player these days just like in the early-late 80's everyone seemed to have a VCR.

Would you say this was a good thing to do or should we do a smaller batch of VHS movies also?

    Thoughts on this?

    Regards,

    Lee

If you had to choose just one of the two, I'd go with DVD because, as you said, everybody and their brother seems to have a DVD player. However, just to cover all bases, I'd add a few VHS copies in there as well. :goof:

OK folks. I got some stuff to say about this. What country are we selling them too...?

In the US, it's honestly a mix right now. DVDs are selling a little more now, because of the price of DVD players being so low now. (i.e. from 1 video, we would move like 450 vhs copies and 495 copies on dvd.) Those numbers for DVD sales are going up very very quickly in the US. (I would bet money on it that the main reason is that large chain stores are stopping their sales of VHS machines, or only selling 1-3 different machines. Compared to 20 different dvd machines. If it is in Europe, I only sell DVDs to them. Some of the studios have pal formats, but I still will only pick up 1-5 copies of them. The English seem to be more on technology and accepting it then we in the US are.

With the rise in DVD players being bought and used now, the production costs behind making DVDs has lowered; almost to the same cost of producing a VHS. To make a VHS copy of a movies after covers are done and movie is edited costs about $1.00 per copy. Where as a dvd costs about $1.50.

I personally prefer dvds because of the large multi purpose marketing potential behind them. i.e commercial spots for sites you own, or hell, make a little cash off friends and allow them to buy an ad spot on the disk. (Who wouldn’t want to have an ad waiting to be seen in 1000’s of worldwide stores?

Can you tell this is what I do for a living?

I think DVD is probably the way to go, but VHS still has a market. A lot of people have moved the VCR down into the basement or into their bedroom and that tends to be where you're more likely to... um.. watch porn videos.

I know that on the non-porn retail side, DVD outsells VHS by a 3-1 ratio. VHS really only sells in any numbers with movies that appeal to children who inherited the VCR once Dad bought the DVD Player, and older audiences who are more reticent to adopt new technology. The 18-34 demographic is almost 95% DVD now (I used to run purchasing for a major music/DVD reatailer here in Canada)

    I'd pick DVD

Also read somewhere last year that the BestBuy VHS racks almost got no traffic, and they don't even stock on VHS tapes it's all about the DVDs

The prices I quoted where from doing a run of 3000 dvds. If you do smaller runs the price goes up. Just so you all know.
