How safe and secure are free Cloud Servers?

How safe is it to keep some of your files on these free cloud servers? Call me paranoid, but I wonder about them. Especially the free ones. Are there any that have been around for a long time and have earned some trust?

Your feedback is much appreciated. Thanks.

They're as good as you keep your password safe. I don't know if they encrypt your data but I would imagine they do not if your password is recoverable.

I don't use the free ones much, Gdrive and Skydrive only but even then it's mostly when I want to share a file with someone.

Everything I backup is on a paid service, encrypted with a long key only I know so even if someone ran off they'd have a bunch of scrambled stuff and nothing of value

By the way, SkyDrive from Microsoft doesn't allow anything porn or nude uploaded.

As jIgG stated above, I only use cloud services for sharing files. I also sell music to artists and companies and Dropbox is my main vehicle for content delivery. If the question is of backing up files and content, I just stick to keeping stuff on my server and on external drives.

    But that is just me.

    Thanks for the feedback folks.

I've been looking into a paid service. The free ones freak me out too much. And if they don't allow anything adult then I'm screwed with them anyway.

Basically, my external drives are full, so they're out of the question. I installed Ubuntu alongside Windows and half my HDD went with it. Ubuntu isn't working properly, after much troubleshooting and command prompting, so I want to uninstall it and/or reformat Windows. But I have to back up all my files first of course. This is why I need some place to back up my extra stuff. My current HDD is getting quite full.

I'll go with a paid service and let you know how it goes.

    Thanks again

Why not pick up some more external hard drives? I'm seeing crazy price reductions now with Black Friday right around the corner.

I am seeing a 2 TB and 3 TB Personal Cloud Storage unit here for under $200: TigerDirect ... and other external and internal drives as well. Some even have free shipping.

LOL. Right on Bec. I picked up an external 2TB drive today for $140. And I have another Lacie Firewire one coming. Used, but got it for $20.

That now provides me with 5 external drives and 4 flash drives. All are almost full. Will I ever have enough space? LOL!

    Thanks for the tips Bec

Glad you picked up more drives. I find the whole "cloud" thing a bit scary too, and would prefer to keep my files close to home. Just a suggestion -- put "absolutely can never lose files" onto a drive that goes into a fire and water proof safe and/or a box at the bank.

Yes, I've been thinking about that. I'm starting my own pay site and with the cost of the content it's definitely a good idea to put them in a danger proof place.

    Thanks

external drives are great for "travel" and "temporary" storage in the event your invaded by "homeland security" you just throw it into a microwave for 30 seconds ... oh , you may damage your microwave. - LOL

I would recommend anything but WESTERN DIGITAL , SEGATE at the least and back up your back up because eventually it will fail to read! ... been there done that , returned to verify!

Just an FYI update, the 2 TB ($149) and 3 TB ($179) drives at Tiger Direct are discounted today with free shipping. Those units have usb expansion capabilities as well.
