    ok so what's the best one?
    i fiddled with movable type before we went to DC for a has been blog.

    are there any others worth checking out preferably written in PHP and free

    If you want a VERY simple and free PHP blogging/news tool, you may want to try CuteNews. I use it on a non-adult site I run, and it's great.
