i swear those guys have a deal with icann or something. if a domain expires, they get it. doesnt matter if other people have used those bidding places or not. ive lost a number of domains to ultrasearch, mostly thru fault of my own obviously for letting them expire.

There are a few companies that have close relations with some domain registrars and they end up nabbing some great domains both BEFORE they are registered and AFTER they have expired.
