Do You Pay Attention To The Words You Use?

When you are building a new site, regardless of which market or niche it is for how much thought do you put into the wording of that site?

A thread on another of our forums recently discussed a new sponsors site that had launched which, if this sponsor had thought about it, could have become very profitable for them as it was well suited to a really undeveloped niche as of right now.

Anyway a long story short, the sites concept, although geared towards one demographic (females) was actually marketed to a male audience instead and, well the wording on it was somewhat insulting towards females.

This got me int thinking how much time do we actually put into the wording we use on our sites overall and, are there certain words (other than illegal ones such as child porn, etc) that you refuse to use on your sites?

I put a great deal of thought and effort into it, or at least try to.

I think too many don't and so miss an opportunity to grab a larger share of the surfers out there.

Personally, I think of a site as an extension of myself, I want it to feel like something other than a selling platform, so the words can help me in giving the site some personality, which hopefully makes the surfer more comfortable in plucking down some cash.

Pics are good but a pic and some hard hitting ad copy are way better. Least in my opinion.

I have not developed a site myself, but I review alot of sites submitted to our network. Those I do not personally like are sites that degrade ones intelligence. From a business perspective, I understand that there are surfers that are turned on by that. I, however, prefer to steer clear. There is one word about which I have mixed feelings. That is "bitch". Presently, this word comes with connotations of sassiness, power and respectability. However, I still see it used in a degrading context, and, in those instances, I do not appreciate its use at all. Again, I am not a developer, nor a writer by nature. I only know what triggers a reaction within myself and know, if I were to develop a site, words such as "stupid", "ignorant" and unflattering uses of "bitch" would definitely be absent from my sites.

I know that I am not a writer. I fine on the phone or in person, but writing it down on paper is not something that I am good at. So knowing this I will always find someone that is gifted with words. It is worth it to find someone that is good with words, because it will help. If it comes down to it, hire a writer to just do that. (I wouldn't hire one for free/aen sites.) Larger more involved free sites yes.
