VOTE: Which Simpsons Character is Gay?

The Simpsons' to host Homer-sexual wedding

By Andrew Clennell 28 July 2004

A long-time character on The Simpsons is to come out of the closet as the creators of the show send their own message about the controversial topic of gay marriages.

The news was leaked by the show's producers, Matt Groening and Al Jean, at a comic convention in San Diego.

"We have a show where, to raise money, Springfield legalises gay marriage," Mr Jean told comic book fans. "Homer becomes a minister by going on the internet and filling out a form. A long-time character comes out of the closet, but I'm not saying who."

Speculation in the US yesterday was focusing on the nuclear power plant boss Montgomery Burns' assistant Waylon Smithers, whose sexuality has long been the subject of speculation among Simpsons fans.

Others guessed that one of Marge Simpson's chain-smoking sisters - Selma and Patty - could be the gay character.

The gay marriage episode is scheduled to be shown in January.

Mr Groening said that he still planned to make a Simpsons feature film, but production would not start until the television series - in its 16th season - came to an end.

I set up a poll so you can vote for the character that will come out on the Simpsons. As of this writing, Groundskeeper Willie is leading!

well, assuming that homer is getting ordained & performs a wedding in the show, that rules out any of the kids being gay. i think it would have been cool to have a gay teen on the show, so many kids watch it.

smithers is obviously gay.

im betting on either:

a) one of marge's sisters, if not both
b) mr burns
c) moe
d) flanders (if he's still single - didnt his wife die?)

I'm a huge Simpson's fan. But what throws me off... does Waylon Smithers really need to come out? Doesn't everyone already know?

Then there is Lenny and Carl. There are constant hints to something deeper.

Selma or Patty... that's just too cheap and easy.

Groundskeeper Willie... that's a good one!

Here is my darkhorse candidate... Ned Flanders. Well, he is a little light in the loafers and he does have that bitchin' bushy mustache and a very muscular torso. And he is very sexually repressed. Also, he is the only prominent character they've really fucked with... by permanently killing off his wife Maude.

You do realize by 'gay' I mean a man who has sex with other men?

I think it'll be someone like Lisa or Millhouse.

Another good candidate... Principal Seymour Skinner. A lifelong bachelor Mamma's boy... and unless I don't recall properly, he's still a virgin. Did Edna Crabapple and Skinner ever consumate their relationship?

Oh... I'm sure that would be too extreme, even for the Simpsons.

We saw the news yesterday and my immediate answer was Barney. The episode with the independent film festival came to mind. His movie was just tooooo artisitic for words LOL

Smithers is just too obvious to come out. That would be an anticlimax.

Willy.... Hmmmm he does have some body! LOL

I had to vote for Barney, though.

I think Flanders has too much religion wrapping him up to come out...and we all know Smithers is gay, but since he is in love with Mr Burns, he wouldn't marry anyone else, and I don't think Burnsey is going to be the one.. can't be any of the kids since there is a wedding involved.
Principal Skinner is a good choice, but his bachelor-for-life status makes him too stereotypical....I think they will want a bigger impression. The ambigiously gay characters would be too obvious and not make the biggest splash. Barney, well, I think he is straight.

My vote is Willy. How many straight janitors have pecs and abs like that??? Really, he is not just in good shape, he is in Gay Shape!! And Willy coming out would get a lot of attention. He has always been a good guy, always protecting the schoolchildren (as opposed to oggling them, like some homophobes think we do) and it would make a the points I think they will want to make--gay people don't all fit the stereotype, they live and work among us [and among children] and gays are good people. They are trying to send a supportive meassage, right?? Plus, I think we are in better shape and better looking :-) Willy is in the best shape of any of them!
