Do you know the average age of your customers? I believe I saw some research that said the average age of an adult merchandise consumer is approx. 30.

Not too sure I'd know the answer to that one, but I do know that the average age of the one's who actually write and comment to me are over 55... though I have had a few in their 20's but.. majority over 55.

We have done some research on this in the past with members...

Gay site majority was 40-55 with about 45% (and women members of them was 30-40 with about 70%)

Straight site majority was 30-40 with about 30% but 40-55 was not far behind.

Not mathematically significant numbers but with more than 200 response to the members surveys on the gay sites, still a fair rule of thumb.

Statistically, porn surfers are commonly aged between 26-53 according to a research document i found several years ago however this has more than likely changed since then.

I know when it comes to certain niches in the adult industry they are more likely to sell to a specific demographic. One good example of this is the tranny niche, the target audience for this niche is between the ages of 30-55, usually affluent business types such as wall street types etc.

Of course this doesnt always hold true but if you can target your surfers demographics when it comes to marketing specific niches it can drastically improve joins.

Yeah, in the research I did, I found an article that I recall saying was around 30 for adult sites. But, there seems to be a consensus that the avg age to gay adult sites is considerably older.

I will see if I can find the article. The article also said there is very little reliable data as adult webmasters are not very willing to share data. If that's true, I don't understand why; it seems to me that by cooperating to accumulate demographic could only benefit all involved. I don't think it's going to give away anyone's trade secrets. But, then again, I'm just starting, so it's somewhat self-serving for me to make that statement. But it would seem that data would be readily available as I assume most adult webmasters ask the age of the person signing up.

a few things about the article; the avg age was 33, but that men and women for adult sites. I'm not sure that it included any gay sites. Also, this report was for scientific research, not market research; and, based on that that results would probably be different that a market research project. So, I think that this article (which was the only one I found on demographics) isn't all that useful for marketing purposes. But, it is an interesting report.

i suspect that different niches sometimes draw certain ages more than others, but haven't tested this enough to be sure.
