I spent the day playing around with my site description and keywords, and added alt tags to my images. I wonder if I need keywords and descriptions only on my index page, or on all pages? Thx, Glen

What kind of site is it Glen, freesite, paysite, tgp?? That would dictate where and what sort of meta tags you need to apply to the pages.
Well in my opinion, I'd concentrate on having proper keyword phrases in your title tag, in at least 1 H1 tag within the body tag and within at least one sentance/paragraph of text on all pages.
You could use different keyword phrases targetting a different one for each page, further increasing your opportunities with the big SE.
As to meta tags. As they are primarily ignored by the big SE, I'd not spend a great deal of time on those, but they are nice to have, keeping them short and succiinct... say limited to around 15 or so. More than that is really just a waste of effort in my opinion.
Same deal with the description meta tag.
As to the alt tag on your images, don't overdo it either.. won't really help all that much.
While Yahoo seems to enjoy spammy pages, Google is still top dog and they don't, so I'd go for a balance and be careful of over doing the keyword density in the content.
Again just my opinion.

Thx Bell & Ian,
That's for my own photography site http://www.glenmitchell.com (freesite). Since it's not so many pages, I think I'll try Ian's advice using a few keyword phrases targeted to each phrase. I guess I
just got caught up with this after using Submit's meta tag analyzer. Thx Again :-)
Glen if you do a serch of the GWW community forums youll find a few different articles about SEO that should be able to help you out

While most search engines don't bother with the meta tags in terms of ranking your site, they will use them in other ways. So, it's not a bad idea to have them on every page.
As some have already said though, I wouldn't spend a lot of time on them. However, your meta tags should be specific for each page and your keywords tag should not contain words that do not appear on that specific page.

Ya know, I agree with Michael about this. I have spent days looking at overture, google, ect. Trying to figure out what keywords to use.
In all hosesty, I got listed higher from simply chatting on chat boards. I'm not saying to not use keywords and all, but do not think that they are the only thing that will get your site on top of the engine.
You'll get more with a kind word and a 2 by 4 then you'll get with just a kind word.

I think you have just hit the nail on the head in that SEO isn't just about any one specific area.In all hosesty, I got listed higher from simply chatting on chat boards. Keywords help, depending on how they are used within the structure of the site but so are links to the site, anchor text, tags such as H1 and the actual relevancy of the keywords to the actual text content within the pages.
It also helps to know what 'phrases' to use, how popular and how many searches get made for them will further determine how well you rank.. i mean consider that 10million pages have 'sex' in them the phrase you use will be more important so two, three and even four word phrases need to be added into the mix and in some semblence of order.
Just my opinion though.
