Now let's see the go arrest the jesus freak for all the charges of blackmail and invasion of privacy.....

How can hey arrest these people and just let his abhorrent actions go unaddressed. Taking pictures of license plates, tracking you down seems like stalking to me, and the photo with an "invitation" to stop my the church??? Hell, better call in Ashcroft if they used the mail, that makes the preacher a federal felon in my book.

well, for one thing, no one has pressed charges.

he sounds like a very intrusive person, and would you not think he would have better things to do with his paid time? surely their town is not otherwise perfect? no child or spousal abuse he could unearth, that would actually help someone?

there are several stories about sex toy prosecution in texas - one woman wasn't selling them, she had her own personal use toys in her car trunk when she was pulled over.

Well I actually grew up right in that area of Arlington and Fort Worth, and I can give some insight about this news story:

First, those particular adult bookstores are pretty notorious. A friend of mine who lives in Fort Worth always refers to one of those establishments (I don't remember which) as "The Glory Hole Place." It has a very lively arcade area with lots of gloryholes in the walls. And it's very busy.

He's told me some stories that would make great material for one wild sexflick. (and would be shunned by the major california gay studios too) Now I am a philisophical libertarian about public sex laws, however I can also recognize that almost every area in the United States has them.

These were not instances of the cops invading someone's privacy. In those particular bookstores, it's very much public and out in the open. I actually haven't lived there since I was 18, but I did check them out years ago, and they were pretty seedy.

Oh - regarding the mayor described in that news story - that mayor of Kennedale used to live in Arlington, and I went to high school there when he was on the city council. (Arlington is a classic suburbia community - think of the neighborhood the students in Sixteen Candles or Home Alone lived in). During Jim Norwood's term, he made a big public deal that one particular city park (which happened to be right next to my house), complaining that it was a busy cruise park. Actually it was.

However, the good news is that he was defeated for reelection, and since I see he is mayor of Kennedale, I guess he got ran out of town. hehe. (Kennedale is a wide spot in the road - maybe like two thousand people)

From what I can make out of the article - it looks like they arrested the employees of the businesses. They didn't arrest guys in the back with their pants down. (public sex is a class A misdemeanor in Texas) It sounds like Mayor Norwood is trying to harass those businesses into shutting their doors. That's pretty thin ice he is on. I don't know if that will fly in a court.
And I think those places are actually in the Fort Worth city limits anyway.

But then if I recall, he's not really the brightest bulb in the universe.

desslock - seems like arresting the business owners might be more reasonable. perhaps they want to scare other employees away from working for the bookstores, but it's fucked up.

also if they were arresting people regarding sex in the bookstores, i am pretty sure the charge would not be obscenity.

There is a small Victorian town about 20 miles from me that just got a adult video store this summer. The store is located just outside of town next to a major interstate and tons of truck-stops. The churches are doing the same thing it this town as they are in that news report. The churches have been protesting it at town meetings and taking pictures of peoples cars that enter the store and mailing them post cards. The churches argued that school buses drive past the store to get the the school 3 miles away and this would some how affect the kids on the buses. The store has nothing on the outside beside a small sign saying "adult store". I can't believe these religious freaks want to live in a country where you have your picture taken when you go into certain establishments that they disagree with. People arguing for the adult store asked these people if they would like it if they started taking pictures of cars going to bars. The church freaks said that the bars were not the problem because they sponsored little league baseball teams and contributed good things to the town. Ya good things! Drunk dads, drinking and driving, and bar fights. I really can't understand people that think like this. If our country gets four more years of the Bush administration there is going to be a lot more of this going on in our country and worse.

    Oh yep yep!

Of course, this case could be a interesting way to hang a thesis like - "Using gorilla tactics to accomplish your political objectives is cruel and unreasonable."

At least here in Austin, anti-porn crusaders usually have a lifespan of a year or two, then they move on. The one I am thinking of here all got in trouble with the law actually.
