In what format are porn movies shot?

Hi all,

I have a guy who is writing a story for my site and he's an absolute bear car when it comes to detail.

He's wanting to know in what format most gay porn movies would be shot: 8mm, super 8, video?

Any ideas?

We shoot on MiniDV here. Best quality by far.

Hi8 would be ok for Web Streaming so long as you never planned on putting the stuff on DVD.

Video is only good for your kid's birthday parties.

They haven't made 8mm and Super 8 "film" for consumers since the 70s.

I think you are referring to 8mm or Hi8 "video", and those tapes are getting harder to find. In order to edit on a computer, a Hi8 camera needs an additional gadget to convert the signal to digital.

MiniDV cameras start at $299, and you can plug it right into the firewire to edit on the computer.

Almost all gay stuff is shot on minidv with 3ccd cameras as others have mentioned.

That having been said, I've seen a large shift in the straight market to shooting everything in HDTV. They are building up their library of hi-res material for the new DVD formats coming out in two years that will be 1080 resolution. There is also already a secondary market for them in the HDTV PPV straight adult channel being offered on DirecTV.

HDTV cameras are expensive though, so I think we will continue shooting minidv ourselves for a while longer. Anyway, just a heads up...
