I Wonder? New to Board - Have Question

    Hi guys (and gals)..

New to the board, but want to start off with a question.

Can you suggest some good, common catchphrases from within the Gay community?

Some sayings that are instantly recognizable.. ?

Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks a lot!

I'm not sure what you mean...

you mean things like "Miss Thing" and "woof"?

Well, you know how people can hear things and that instantly tells them what it is..

'Size matters' - you know this has to do with penis enlargement

'I did it my way' - fast becoming known as Viagra tag line

'Chick magnet' - you know this is describing a man who is very attractive to the opposite sex

'Where do you want to go today?' = you know this is the catchphrase for Microsoft.

    and etc.

that kind of thing, but with the gay audience in mind, some phrases that are commonly used to describe gay activity, or anything within the gay world.

I'm an outsider and want to appeal to the mass gay audience, but from a perspective/standpoint/phrasing that is recognisable.

I hope you get what I mean... thanks!

    erg.

    um..

    well.

I think the gay community is way to diverse for catch phrases. It's been said here a gazillion times.. gay isn't a niche, it's an orientation, unwhich there's hundreds of niches.

ok.. say "Woof". That's generally what Bears/Skinheads/Leathermen/Skins use as a mating call.. but guys into twinks will run screaming from that.

I say "Shag" a lot to describe my exploits, but other guys have no idea what the heck I'm talking about.

I'm not sure if there's a gay slogan like "freshness never tasted so good" that would appeal to a mass gay audience.

Well.. it's not to make fun, it's more to be 'recognized' - something that will feel familiar, do you get what I mean?

We're going to be starting a forum for surfers and I want to start off with the right 'feel' rather than coming from a hetero point of view and screwing it up, d'you know what I mean?

(Finger Lickin Good is hilarious btw Jason - thanks )

Shag - - I used to use that term all the time - it's British, so maybe that's why folks don't get it

Well.. any help in any way is much appreciated, and hopefully we'll be able to learn more and develop a stronger knowledge of the gay community so that we can provide appropriate content and language on our site.

    Please keep the comments/suggestions coming!
    Thanks!

well, here's the thing...and i think the point jasun was trying to make:

indulge me if you will. when i was learning american sign language, i was constantly surprised by the number of people who assumed that it was some sort of magical communication bridge for deaf people worldwide. in fact, for every dialect of every spoken language, there is at least one version of sign. the one and only thing that unites deaf people on a global scale is the fact that they can not hear.

to a degree, i understand where you're coming from ruth. the misconception that gay people have some sort of "secret handshake" is fairly vast among straight people. the one and only factor that we all have in common is that we are sexually attracted to our own gender. other than that, the differences are vast.

i'm sure this is overkill analysis on a simple question, but truthfully, a lot of gay business people, as well as customers, will get offended if you treat gay as a niche. for every fetish in the straight market, there's a counterpart in the gay market. but you're right, there is often different terminology. (ie: twinks, bears, etc...) i believe there was a post here a while back that listed a fairly comprehensive list of gay-market keywords. i'll see if i can find it.

thanks for your interest in doing it right.

I understand what you mean, and that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid... I don't want our surfers to feel mocked or irritated or anything negative from our site.

Some targeted keywords would be awesome and would probably help me no end - thank you!

People are people regardless of their sexual orientation, colour, religion, etc, I know that, but there are some things that appeal more to certain 'types' of people than to others, and that's NOT being bigoted or stereotyping, it's just a fact of the world.

THAT is where I'm coming from - again, it's more to provide 'familiarity' when posting categories and naming the forum itself.

For example, the gfy board goes for the name that fits with the 'niche' so to speak of adult webmasters - I'm wanting something that fits with the gay community.

Thanks again for the interest and the help, it's very much appreciated!

    Welcome to GWW! :high:

A good place to start your research is http://www.menonthenet.com or http://www.hunkhunter.com

Take a look at the different catch phrases there :-D

One question: What motivates you to create a Gay site instead of the more common straight sites? Seems you would know your own market better?

Thanks! I'll check those sites out.

We're already working within the Gay Industry somewhat and we're just wanting to expand our range within the market - a forum is just part of our plans.

Straight sites are saturated - the gay market has not been touched on as much - we reckon there's a market there for a lot of the products that we sell, so a nice match we think - and from the webmasters I've personally worked with (and other people) within the Gay Industry (and not to be a stereotyper (geez - PC gets annoying sometimes though )) - the folks I've worked with are wonderful!

I'd say you can expect to see me around this board a lot.

Yeah, but don't you think the NAME of the message board says something about the board itself?

I know it'll take care of itself once it's up and we're sending traffic there, but I don't want to call it something stupid and have us waste sending traffic there cos we turn folks away with our name.. do you know what I mean ?
