AVI converter question

Does anyone know of a free AVI converter/compresor?

I say free because I figure I wont get very much use out of it.
I have a few videos I'd could use it with.

I used to have one but I'll be dammed if I can find it on this mess of a computer and I can't remember the name of it (time to clean out all the useless crap)
