I need a mentor

Ok, maybe this is a really stupid thread, and if so, I apologize. I have just found it's best to be honest and up front about things. I've recently been hired by Buck Angel to help him with his marketing and public relations. Problem is, Buck's primary market is gay and I'm straight. So now I'm trying to learn what I can about the gay market.

I just read another post here about how some straights will come in here, ask a few questions and then leave. I have no desire to do that. I look forward to becoming part of this community and participating in any way I can.

To be honest, my motivation is partly due to business concerns and partly personal. After the election, I saw the political pendelum of this country continue it's swing to the right. I saw issues that concerned me, like gay marriages, blown to the wind. I saw a powermad group of people twist the minds of the American public and hammer their agenda through the use of fear and prejudice. It was a wakeup call to me. I realized I can no longer sit on my ass and stay quiet.

So I'm asking for help. Help me to understand. Only when we can break down the barriers between us can we grow and learn. Is anyone here willing to educate a straight guy?

Not sure how to really answer your post ... especially since many of us have been trying for sometime now to figure out how to promote/market Buck to the masses. Ultimately, I think he'd do well with the Bears/Leather and BDSM categories in the Gay men's market. I'm also thinking that he'd do well with some serious marketing efforts to countries outside the US of A.

Start doing some research and learn all you can about extreme bdsm sex, fisting, bear lovers, and leathermen. Visit those types of sites, study how they talk, study the imagery, etc. The better you understand that aspect of the market, the better you'll be able to target it.

Hi Bec! (Big Kiss!! :love: ) Good to see you again. Buck and I were just talking about you the other day. Yes, the site is up and running, although I'm currently having some trouble, but I'm changing my host company to chilihost, so I know it will be ok. Luke is DA MAN!

Yes, marketing Buck is a challenge and I agree that the bear, BDSM market is prime. We are also exploring different European markets too, but I still think he can do well domestically. I'm working on broad strokes right now in trying to get him as much national publicity as possible while still focusing our marketing on specific areas.

Still, I know my limitations and I'm used to marketing adult entertainment in the straight community and the gay market is still so new to me. But with people like Buck, Luke and you, Bec, I feel really comfortable here. Thanks for taking the time to say hi.

Here's a tip for marketing content like this... Get a good video with your site address watermarked on the corner of the video. In the beginning and end titles put the name and address of the site. Sign up with various VOD sites and submit this video. You'll make money on the free exposure and get a core client base that are qualified as spending money for this niche.

Bec is right about Bears/Leather and BDSM categories in the Gay market for Buck. Hell they'd take Buck anywhere because the wouldn't know what to do with him. A pleasant surprise in any market. Depending on the content you have, you might want to think about Buck as a dominatrix in straight porn.. that market is very hot AND lacks a lot of diversity like this. :whip:

But that's really the problem with marketing Buck. Most men that are into hairy men/leather/bdsm types are going to be turned off by the pussy (pardon my bluntness). With male-to-female transgender, at least you get the "straight" guys that are curious. It's highly unlikely that gay-curious women are going to get the same thrill that men get from looking at male-to-female transgender porn.

Buck is his own niche. Maybe he would appeal to straight-curious gay men... if there is such a thing, .

Buck is also a novelty (sorry, but it's true). And because he is so unique, everyone should have some curiosity. Maybe if Buck's site was part of a larger group of sites... straight and gay, there would be less of a risk for curious surfers to join.

Nope, I don't think you're speaking out of your ass. I hear you trying to talk very sensitively about a difficult issue, but at the same time, trying not to sugar coat the reality.

Unfortunately, I think for a lot of the straight market, transgendered people are fodder for the Jerry Springer show. Gay people are getting better, but we've got a ways to go.

Xstr8guy, don't worry about sounding offensive. Buck is cool with everyone's perspective. You bring up some valid points. Right now, people DO see Buck as a novelty. But then, a number of years ago, M to F trannies were novelties too. Now that market is exploding.

You might also take a look at the BDSM world, where just about anything not just goes, but is embraced.

Most BDSM folks have appreciation for our brothers and Sisters who just don't seem to fit into other worlds. There really isn't gay vs straight like I see in other societies, but an honest interest in the differences.

I know if Buck was to accept an invitation to one of our gatherings, he would be accepted without question, and feel the warmth and welcoming attitude we try to instill for all our members.

Shoot! you let me know a date, and I'll make it so, perhaps arrange a week end party at the dungeon in his Honor. With over 5000 square feet of social area, stations and equipment, I bet a grand time would be had by all.
