    Video Editing - Help!

Hey everyone. I need YOUR help!

Ok so i've shot a bunch of videos on Mini-DV but i haven't even attempted to edit any of them. The truth is...i'm freaked out about all the work that i think is involved!!

But we all know that if you ignore and avoid doing something, it wont just go away, it'll only get worse, and so here i am asking for your help.

These vidoes are all going to be used on the web, so they need to be formatted (is that the right word???) in different sizes, for people with different internet connections.

Some of my questions are...What's the first step? What things do i need to know for a job like this (i have a very limited knowledge of Premier)? Is there any difference between streaming video and downloadable video? How about speeds like 96, 346, 1496kbps?

Man, i'm totally clueless when it comes to this stuff so ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks guys,

    Allan

first off, i don't use premiere. it's heavy on cpu usage, and cumbersome. it requires lots of knowledge i don't possess. get a copy of ulead video toolbox, and the splitter from boilsoft. i can talk you through the rest, and they are VERY easy to use!!!! no timeline

first things first - do you have a firewire or other connection so you can get your videos from the camera into your harddrive. are you able to capture the video?

and you do have one other option - pay someone to encode the videos for you... that's what i used to do

    Hey Basschick. Thanks!

yeah, i have a firewire. I have uploaded short sections of video to my comp to screw around with on Premier, but that's all.

Sorry...i feel like a total boob...but what does "encoding" mean exactly?

    How about "rendering"?

what does the actual "cutting" and inserting transitions called? is THAT encoding?

Do i need different programs for each? Or rather, how many and what programs do i need?

    Currently i only have Premier

The FIRST thing you need to decide is what SIZE you want the video to be in (I'm talking about frame size). 320x240 (the most common)..or BIG like 640x480.

Then you need to decide that FORMAT (mpeg, wmv, rm, mov, etc)

Once you have that, you are now ready to encode (meaning to CONVERT to a 320x240 mpeg for example) video clip.

You'll also need to decide on how long you want each clip to run..and sometimes the SIZE of the video file comes into play here because the LONGER a file plays, the BIGGER it will be. The format size of 640x480 will give you a bigger file size too than a 320x240 format size.

Just a few of the basics.

Thanks Slade. Even simple things like this help put things into prespective for me. So, are kbps related to the frame size at all?

Well, this is a good start anyway, thanks.

Now you are talking about the speed the videos are streaming or downloaded (kilobytes per second).
So..the frame size doesn't really play a role here..just need to have a fast download/upload modem wise.
