I Wonder? Newbie wants to know???

I got an email today. It's the second like it. 1) How did he find me if I am not listed anywhere and 2) Is this legit?

    "Dear President & CEO,

My name is Jerry Alleva. I'm an Internet Investor. I studied your
company profile while searching for a reputable "adult galleries"
website on Google to invest in by running a comprehensive Search
Engine Optimization (SEO) campaign that would significantly
increase your revenues. The exact percentage of profit-sharing on
closed sales is to be negotiated at a later date.

I'm working with a phenomenal Wall Street like company called
Traffic Bus out of Rockville, MD. They've launched over 850 SEO
campaigns for my clients, nearly all of which were highly
successful. I've brokered similar sales contracts over the past
20 years that demonstrated enormous potential for exploiting the
power of SEO for mass on-line visibility, traffic and sales. You
can view some sample their unique client Traffic Stats and
Keyword Visibility Reports verifying 1,000's of Top-20 keyword
    rankings at www.TrafficBus.com/sample/.

Market Research statistics show that 86% of websites are found
from only 20 Search Engines, and 99.1% of users only visit the
first 20 listed sites. Traffic Bus is the only known provider
that is mass positioning websites. Perhaps even better, they do
it for around $1 a keyword per month, where other SEO vendors
typically charge $30-$100 with a maximum of 50 keywords. This is
where Traffic Bus starts and they go to UNLIMITED Top-20 keyword
    rankings.

Traffic Bus has achieved over 1,000,000 Top-20 keyword rankings
and over 25,000 #1 keyword rankings for their clients. That's why
I'm personally recommending them to market your website together
with my investment in two mirror sites, which will triple your
results. Their other assets include a substantial in-house
    database of 550,000,000 targeted e-mail addresses and a 300-seat
    telemarketing call center in Manila.

I have the capital immediately ready to invest in two new mirror
websites for your company on an affiliate basis. You can reach me
through my US contacts at Traffic Bus, Joseph, Sales Manager, or
Jenne, Project Manager at info@TrafficBus.com, or call them today
    at 1-877-546-0450.

When you call Traffic Bus, they'll produce for you all of the
most popular related keywords (search terms) that your potential
customers are daily typing in the search engines. You'll be
amazed see thousands of keywords that generate millions of hits
daily. Traffic Bus will take all of those keywords and mass
position your website where 86% of websites are found, in the
Top-20 search engines within the Top-20 listed sites.

Prior to calling them please review their service offerings at
www.TrafficBus.com/services.htm so you'll have a good idea about
how many keywords you would like to optimize for your site.
Whatever level of commitment you decide to invest in-house, I'll
invest two times the keywords on two new domains on behalf of
your company, but on a profit-sharing affiliate arrangement with
NO further investment to you. That will give you three times the
value then going to Traffic Bus direct.

Please advise Traffic Bus of your compensation plan's Terms and
Conditions, and if they feel that it's acceptable, they'll
immediately advise me to establish the new sites this week.
However, all agreements will be with Traffic Bus directly.

Thank you for reading this and I hope you can arrange a mutually
prosperous transaction with Joseph and/or Jenne Rabe of Traffic
    Bus.

    Sincerely yours,

    Gerald Anthony Alleva

Mamakity and anyone else getting this e-mail,

I would run in the opposite direction for three very good reasons. If you look at the HTML source of their SEO page, you see the following:

    Reason #1:
Anyone who knows anything about SEO knows that the first three words of a page's title are THE most important, you never, ever waste them on something stupid like Trafficbus.com, which is a meaningless keyword, you would do something like "Search Engine Optimization - SEO - Trafficbus.com"

    Reason #2
Anyone who knows anything about SEO knows that the keyword meta tag should only include words that appear as text on that page. Anyone including the number of words you see above needs to see Vanna because they need to buy a clue.

    Reason #3
Pretty much the same as number 2, but apply it to the description tag, which is also full of spam.

I could go on, but suffice it to say, don't waste your money.

You know, Michael, I have to say that having a SEO-Guru in residence is what makes this the best board going.

I would have junked that email the second I got it just because it comes across as extremely smarmy, and if you have to prove to me that you're famous, you're not.

But you actually were able to blow holes in their battleship.

    cool.

Well, Not sure who said it proves anything but if you're as intelligent as you seem to be in the post above, then I shouldn't have to explain that an Alexa of 139,000 isn't too much for a site who's supposed to be in the big huge mainstream traffic business, with all these resources they claim to have.

But there, I explained it anyhow didn't I...

Well perhaps next time you'd like to actually make your point instead of throwing out a piece of useless information and see if we can guess that you're actually trying to say, and then, insulting me because I asked you to make your point. You could have been trying to point of that an Alexa ranking of 139,000 is actually good. I don't know, I don't read minds.

Geez ... for post number 8, you're sure making friends fast.

Ah come on Dzinebear..you're being a tad to rough on our new friend I think. So he didn't EXPLAIN alexa ratings..frankly I thought people in the biz new about the rating system and probably wouldn't say anything about what it meant either.

So he definitely did NOT show you a lack of respect, he/she was simply trying to be helpful.

Actually Slade, you're missing the point. I'm quite aware of what Alexa is, but when someone simply posts a link to an Alexa ranking of 139,000 what is the point that they're trying to make? 139,000 isn't great, but it's not horrible either, it's better than a site with 600,000. And quite frankly, I have a web design site that has an Alexa ranking of 1,770,012, that says nothing about my abilities as a search engine optimizer, it simply means my design site isn't getting a lot of traffic. I do SEO for another site that has 23,000 ranking. And one of my own adult sites is 270,000.

My point to the newcomer was simply this: don't post a link to an Alexa ranking an expect me to interpret what point you're trying to make. Make the link to the Alexa ranking, and then, say, "If they were so good at what they do, they'd have a better ranking." Don't make me guess.

Funny how whenever Alexa gets mentioned it brings out some interesting comments.

I agree that cryptic posts are sometimes hard to fathom, and while Alex rankings to some seem like the gospel or even mean anything, is open for debate. After all Alexa basis its figures on how many times a surfer with an Alexa toolbar goes to the site. As most of those who use it are webmasters or in many instances simply people who constantly hit the refresh button to fudge their rankings on Alexa.. not something I particularly pay any attention to.

Also there does seem to be a bit more sarcism around these days on all boards, not sure why, spring fever perhaps?

Back to topic though, I will say that to me those emails are indeed a scam. To begin with the major SE dont use meta tags for much, only as a very last resort so some care should be still be taken. For established sites I tend to doubt if adding the meta tag keyword is of any value but that is my opinion.

Most SEO say to ignore them, keeping the title tag to 12 words or less but what I think they forget is that many smaller SE's still use the meta tag option, which would explain why some sites have it shown in G or Y or even in MSN.

From what I have seen on the SEO boards and in discussions is that the meta tags like keywords have minimal effect on SERPS. However they can get you into other SE's which in turn are crawled perhaps faster and quicker by the big boys, thus getting you into their SERPS quicker than just waiting for a crawl by them.

Also it should be taken into account that right now the flavour of the month is anchor text but if you practise true SEO tactics, you should still maintain a good flow.. using your title tag (different for each page) a brief meta description, limited meta keyword and naturally the more prominent H1 with a phrase that makes sense and is advertising as well. Then support it with a paragraph and a H2 tag and another paragraph. Using the Alt Tag is good if you don't overdo it, like throwing in 100 word.. keeping it to under 6 or so is good but right now it is the anchor text that gets the G & Y bots licking their chops yet very few in the adult industry bother.

I suppose free targeted traffic is not something most consider, but that is exactly what G & Y & MSN traffic is, targetted and free.

On that note I'd also wonder why most affiliates fail to provide good SE text to go with the glitzy banners? I mean if the goal is to get your affiliates pushing you should, as sponsors, give them the necessary tools and text to go with banners should be right up there. I know on some sites that do it, the click thru ratio is higher on text links than fancy banners. So it begs the question, why ignore the text?

Guess this has turned into bit of a rant, but I find so few sponsor who don't provide good advertising copy to use with their fancy banners. Sure the eye candy is nice but surfers are jaded these days, good stand out text along with a great banner will get more clicks than just the banner... so if your sponsor doesn't support you that way, ADD your own text.

I know that pridebucks and AEBN provide text with their banners... something I think others should take heed of. It does help CONVERSIONS!

Also I'd like to say that SEO is not a science, it is qualitative guesswork in many instances simply because we don't know what the ALGO's use in what degree of authority. In short, right now it appears anchor text works best but who knows what tomorrow will be. So dropping meta tags like some experts suggest is counter productive. I use em still, always will because unlike many I don't do a site in two or three days.. I take time because I want each one to succeed, so yes I spend time agonizing over the text in the title, in the description and keywords plus on the H1 H2 tags etc.

In the long run it does work, it gets you higher in the SERPS and it gets you traffic... free targetted traffic.

So for sites that promote SEO and guarantee you top rankings, I run from because no one, no matter how good can get you there for any certainty. Besides with G not updating as often, PR and such no longer has much weight. So their criteria for proof becomes less. So when you get those emails, in my opinion, you run from them.

    rant over I suppose.
