We always get straight webmasters in here asking how to break into the gay market, but could you venture into the straight market? Would you know what to promote? Would you know what sells? Or, would you be lost? Discuss.

too bad this thread got lost in the shuffle... i think it's a very interesting question, so i'm giving it a bump.
We actually do quite a lot of straight stuff in addition to our gay marketing efforts.
Its worth diversifying in this business because you never really know from one day to the next what is going to sell and what isnt.
We used to sell the mature niche in the str8 side of things really well until a month or two back and now it seems our top straight niche is ebony.
Im sure thatll change again over the coming months though.

Lee
I know some will disagree but I think that as a webmaster you should be able to distinguish what is hot and what is not despite your preference. I know it helps if you do have a passion for a specific niche but overall, I really dont think it matters. Any thoughts?
this seems to vary from person to person. i sell a lot of niches that do nothing for me personally, and i can generally spot and market a lot of niches that don't turn me on. still, it really helps to know what the turnon is to the surfers... so i actually do research on boards, egroups and magazines.

Well I tried to and had a hell of a time. I had a great site and awesome content that updated all the time but could not get signups for shit.
My site was http://www.springbreakboobs.com

Even though I started with gay sites from day one, and always had them... on day three, in this business, I had freelance work selling mature women, ebony and latina.
As Lee said we still have things going. I would say in those first days of marketing straight, I did more, because I wasn't distracted by my content HAHAHA
Now everything numbs me LOL
I think it's very important to like what you sell - especially when you're starting out or building up. But to your comment krusher, if you're a marketer, and don't care (don't mind) what you're looking at, you can tell whats going to sell and what's not and go from there. Just because I'm gay doesn't mean I can't tell what a beautiful woman looks like LOL
I've always joked, 'Even though I don't want to sleep with it doesn't mean I can't sell it.' That goes for Holistic remedies as well as sex LOL

I think it depends on the person. Some are born salesmen and can sell an eskimo a refrigerator in a snow storm, others couldn't sell a thirsty man a glass of water in 100 degree heat.
However I think many gays could market straight simply because many of us have or still do lead the double life that being gay imposes on us. So in a sense we are just as much in touch as the straight folks are, perhaps more so cause we are more dispasionate about it.. its more of a clinical type thing so we might be able to pick up things more quickly... also being gay and leading that double life also makes a person a bit quicker in adapting to change.. we are always looking for the other shoe to drop so to speak so are perhaps a bit more aware of subtle changes happening..
So long story shortened... sure I think gays can indeed market straight.
just my opinion though

If you can get around not liking waht you sell, I think that given a good approach, you can sell to anyone. The hardest part is figuring out why they're buying the stuff. Once you have this figured out, you're golden.Originally Posted by Xstr8guy
I have the opposite problem. When I first started doing sites about 5 years ago I tried selling gay sites and I couldn't do it, but for some reason I was able to sell upskirt & panty sites. Now that I am getting back into it, I still can't sell gay sites well. I think my gay is broken and I'll have to once again revert back to upskirts & panties. I'd much rather work with content that bulges out towards my face instead of content that gets sucked into a camel toe shaped hole, but you have to work with what you can sell. :hmmph:
anymore that is ? just kiddingOriginally Posted by Xstr8guy
I actually started out doing stuff in straight porn. It was ok, did ok on a lot of it, maybe it was just the time period when you could make money on anything. I have to admit I enjoy what I do a lot more now in my niche, so I think that probably carries over to the end product.
Ive signed up with AEBN just recently when you put that other board b4 about VOD. I checked out their site after that and I LOVED IT. Anyhoe, I am promoting both str8 and gay on the site. So far ive gotten 5 sign ups but dunno if they are str8 or gay people. heheheh
wouldn't try this personally. I need to be "into" what i'm selling. And btw...there are gay sites out there by straight webmasters...and they SUCK!! I can pick them out the second i come across them.Originally Posted by Dzinerbear
Don't get me wrong, I don't think it'll be a total failed attempt (surfers will buy almost anything), but you'll be limited as to how large you can grow.
I mean just look at the good gay sites out there. They're all run by gay webmasters.
How can someone do a good job of selling something that they're not passionate about???
