    DVD Distribution question

How does the porn dvd distribution world work? I am going to start filming content for paysites and had the thought of working toward distributing dvds in stores, but I have no idea how the system is set up. How do you make money from it and what kind of money do you make? If you already have hot content can you use that as leverage for a deal or is everything set in stone?

You do realize by 'gay' I mean a man who has sex with other men?

Im sure Andymike will be able to correct me if i am wrong but here goes..

Is there money to be made in it? Yes, lots of it

On average, to produce a single DVD (batch of 2-3000) is going to cost you around the $1 price mark (not including the initial shoots), including the design aspect of both the disc and the cover.

The distributors, will then buy the DVDs from you ranging in price (variant on the quality of DVD) from around $5-$25 per DVD.

So in essence, for an investment of around $5000US you are looking at a potential income level of $25,000US. Not a bad little profit

You also need to get the DVD edited though, id suggest speaking a little with Jasun about that, its what he does

    Regards,

    Lee

But realistically, how many can you expect to sell?

Our first DVD is going for 500 units to start withour distributor, with an expected sell out within a week. After that we are forecasting a new order for 2000 units for nationwide distribution. At $10-$15 per unit, that's about a $25,000 - $37,500 return.

I paid $3700 to have the flick edited, $3000 for authoring and replication (which is the total package... disc art, DVD jacket & insert, plus authoring and shrink wrap).

I was reading on another site about how hard it is to be accepted by a major distributor in the straight market because distributors only look at well established companies. Is this the same for the gay market? I know it depends on quality level, but if I have high quality will I get the chance in the gay market to get distribution of my dvd's?

    Not necessarily.

Every company has their stadrads, however. You just need to find the right company suited to distribute your product. For example:

RAD Video wouldn't distribute tranny porn (I might be wrong, but just as an example).

Anyway, I sent you an ICQ. Get back to me and I'll help you with what I know.

    :-)

    what a great thread!

I had no idea there was so much money to be made in DVDs.

A question that i also share with dknu247 is that what are the chances of a good distributor picking up your stuff if you haven't established a name for yourself?

Lets say that the content and quality are both great, but that you're a new company without a recognizable name. Would they still "try" you out?

    DVD Distribution

Str8 titles are much harder to sell and very difficult to get your foot into the door sort to speak. The problem with our industry is that anyone with a video camera and some sort of editing equipment can make a "homemade" porn video and they think they can sell it and make $$$$$. The industry gay or str8 (mostly str8) gets bombarded with these types of individuals soliciting there style of adult entertainment. Many distributors are tired of getting emails or phone calls or samples being mailed to them all the time with this type of film-maker so the distributors have made it a bit more challenging to get your foot in the door.

As far as the gay distribution, it's pretty much the same but gay titles sell for more money and seem to be more in demand and many str8 distributors and adult video stores profit a lot from selling gay adult videos. Getting your videos seen to distributors is much easier then the str8 world of adult entertainment, but your product has to be good and professionally put together.

The distributors look for the following:

    1. Professionally made DVD with quality lighting and footage. Hot guys that can be marketable. Good camera angles and good camera work and quality of the DVD. Good sound and Good editing.

    2. Marketable boxcovers, good clear pictures...professionally printed DVD inserts and printed DVD labels that should be silked screen make sure all the 2257 compliance is on your boxart and DVD label and on the video.

    3. The DVD is shrink wrapped and ready to be shipped.

Once again if you have any questions contact me.

    DVD sold or not!!!

    Sorry...I forgot...

Its not a guarantee that your videos will sell or not...some studios new or old have DVD videos that do well and sell plenty and some just bomb!!!

Its very competitive, when your a new company...if your boxart is great and your content is excellant your chances are greater for you to succeed.

Its the sample as if you're going to open up a website...how did you know your site was going to do well or not? Don't you promote and market your site? What is the quality of your site? How does your site compared to others? What is different about your site compared to others?? The same questions apply when your creating a DVD.

I'll offer you an additional distribution angle that is non-exclusive and completely in addition to any other channel you choose to distribute in.
If you have first person, POV, or "gonzo" style content, we can offer you another revenue stream for it. We manufacture and distribute the Virtual Sex Machine. We would encode your content for use on our machine. (We add the coding to make the machine duplicate the actions in the video) so the customer can actually "feel" the action.

For you, the content producer, we offer no competition to your normal release channels (Our use is proprietary to our device,) we give you an additional customer base, (Customers you wouldn't have otherwise) and we pay you more than any other source in the industry. And our revenues are continuing. There is no "top end" or "maximum payout." Product also has longer legs with us. We are still doing a brisk business with the same video material we had 5 years ago. Everything is "new" to our customer base.

You can get more info here:

Virtual Sex Machine-The future of Virtual Sex
Click on the "content producers" link. Also,m check out the "private label" link where we will brand a version of the machine with your star's name.

Oh, and one other important thing....NO COST TO YOU. We cover all the production costs of the discs, Packaging, inserts, machine, etc. All you supply is the content and any advertising graphics you want us to use.
