I mean look at Ellen D. She was destroyed by coming out, now she's the Gay lapdog for straight America. Rarely do you see an openly Gay guest, or Gay topic, and she's in a powerful position. It used to be the same with Oprah and black guests, until she amassed enough power to be true to herself, and her people openly.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, except for Ellen. I think she is doing well in showing middle America that gays and lesbians are people just like them. There are a lot of venues where the glbt community can preach to the choir. Someone needs to seep into mainstream culture unnoticed and give the subliminal message that we are not all child molesters and freaks. I say that because when I was younger my mom always acted like every gay person I knew was out to rape me. And when Ellen first came out my mom always called her names when she came on the TV. Now, years later, my mom actually enjoys Ellen's show, knowing full well that she's a lesbian. Yes, the in-your-face protests let people know we're here, but once they see people just like them reflected in the media, then they'll start to accept us as people, and only then will they begin to accept our differences.

Free speech is a right but freedom from consequences of that speech is not.

I agree. you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater, for example.

First off I truly respect Ellen as she put it all on the line, was beat down, and had the strength to rise again. It's her life, and her career. Straight women love a good Lesbian leader and I think that rocks. Everyone has their place, and I guess she's ended up in a better place then Rosie has as of today.

I think that free speech is one thing, but APPROPRIATE speech is all together different. I think a shirt like that is not appropriate in a school environment. Nor do I feel that the making and wearing of such articles promotes the love thy neighbor demeanor that God supposedly intended for us to display. This whole shoving of people's religious beliefs down everyone else's throat is annoying and inappropriate....in ANY ENVIRONMENT. I find it ironic that America was founded so that we could escape religious persecution and now we are falling victim to it all over again IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!
